Thumbs down Dealer reset oil use indicator to 60%

This is the THIRD time these jakelegs have done this. Took Silent Sam in for oil-filter-rotation yesterday. Got in the truck and checked the oil life indicator, and it was at 60%.

Asked the service writer why. He said it was for my convenience so I wouldn't go over the useful oil life.

Bravo Sierra!

I've been driving since I was fourteen, 51 years ago. I've built and raced cars and roadracing motorcycles. I DON'T 'forget' to check my oil.

Yes, I know why they do it, to get the suckers back in more often for their 'oil change special'.

Still ticks me off and I told 'em so. Again. They said they wouldn't do it next time. Again.

How can they even do that? I know you can go in a reset it, but I've never seen the option to reset it to a specific percentage.

SouthWest Ford!! They have done that to me twice. I came to the same conclusion that you did, that they're trying to get people to come in for more oil changes

One more year of 'free' service and I'll not darken their door again!

Can't you just reset it yourself and be back to 100%?

I know the is off topic but... I also took my truck to them went my ecoboost stalled out and tripped a warning code. They said "the code cleared itself" so they tried to duplicate the problem by ragging on my truck for 20 miles (without my consent). My average mpg for that tank went from 19 to 11. I really don't like them much

This is from my 2010 manual but should be applicable to new models as well as long as the DIC is the same??

OIL LIFE
This displays the remaining oil life.
An oil change is required whenever indicated by the message center and
according to the recommended maintenance schedule. USE ONLY
RECOMMENDED ENGINE OILS.
To reset the oil monitoring system to 100% after each oil change
(approximately 7,500 miles [12,000 km] or 12 months) perform the
following:
1. Press and release the SELECT/RESET stem to display “OIL LIFE
XXX% HOLD RESET = NEW”.
2. Press and hold the SELECT/RESET stem for two seconds and release
to reset the oil life to 100%.
Note: To change oil life 100% miles value from 7,500 miles (12,000 km)
or 12 months to another value, proceed to Step 3.
3. Once “OIL LIFE SET TO XXX%” is displayed, release and press the
SELECT/RESET stem to change the Oil Life Start Value. Each release
and press will reduce the value by 10%.

You can set it to any number you want. It is in the manual. Per the manual: 100% roughly equals 7500 miles (what Ford specs for "normal" driving). 60% (where mine was set when it was last changed) roughly equals 5000 miles. Most dealers say to change at 5k because of stop and go driving, towing, short trips, etc.

The last thing a service adviser wants to do is a oil change, every time a dealership does an oil change they do one they loose money .

you take a 15.00 an hour guy pay him 1/2 hour to do the job 2.75 per qt for oil
and 5.00 oil filter pay a cashier a porter a parts man and a service adviser and at the end of the day you did not make any thing, you lost $.

The reason is that you need to protect the owner from there self.
You never know what they tow or if it idles for hours at a time at a job sight so we try to help people out , the oilminder will go off after 10k ,Idont know about you but im not going to run my oil for that long on my 50k turck.

And I will tell you if that thing blows up cuz you went 10k towing and idleing who is on the hook... well hope you get my point.

Not busting you up Im a fellow f150 lover just wanted to show you the other side of the coin.

That's what I do. Easy enough. Just ticks me off that they take me for an imbecile!
