Even most of the "Quick Lube" places will pull the stick in front of you before you pay and get out of there. Its for them to help cover their rear ends in a liability situation

Actually, the dealer/shop makes $75-$100/hr. The mechanic probably makes $15-$35/hr.

I get free oil changes from my dealer and always check after the work is done.

That is absolute garbage! I NEVER once brought my 08 back to the dealer for any maintenance ever. I never would. It did go in for warranty repairs (well not to my selling dealer a local one) and I ran into a few minor issues. Each time I called Ford right away and it got resolved.

I wonder what would happen if you called Ford on this?

Even worse, at $15 an hour, how can you expect them to change the oil AND check their work by pulling the stick? It's not right!

Had a similar mishap with a dealer service for my wife's Camry. She had the service done (oil change and other stuff). Hate that place but its convenient to her work.
First of all, that particular dealer always tries to pitch her services that "must" be done. Luckily she knows not to take their BS and always has the factory service manual handy when they try to pull that. And if they give her crap, she dials me up and hands them the phone so I can politely tell them to kick rocks and do the maintenance as suggested by the manual and I'll gladly check the other stuff when it gets home. Anyway, after an oil change, I noticed the next morning a pretty decent sized puddle of oil on my garage floor. Slid under the car and sure enough, they didn't even tighten the oil drain plug. WTF, I thought. So I tightened it up and checked the oil (little low but still ok), and she went by there on lunch break and have them an earful. They were like "It's ONLY a little low, so it's not a big deal." Not the right answer. She starts pitching a fit about how if she had been on a road trip or not parked in a garage that she would've never even known they DIDN'T DO THEIR JOB. Ended up getting a full credit for the service, but the car no longer receives their "service." Pretty ridiculous what they get paid for simple tasks that they don't even do correctly. Seems all too common these days.

He pulled the wheel off, took the caliper off and put some brake grease anti-squeal stuff between the piston and pad.

Apparently, it's a very complicated process, since the "tech" couldn't find anything wrong!

These days if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. I don't ever see myself taking a vehicle in for a oil change or any light maintenance. I used to work at an independent shop where we had just about everything. It drives me nuts now to have someone else mount and balance my tires and do the alignments. I never did the "set the toe and let'er go" alignment like some shops try to pull.
