Dashcam - Installation & Review (Pics + Video)

Just now purchased the 801 with built in 8GB and no GPS. I was reading a review on dash cams, and it made two points that made sense to me. First, this is not intended to record life events. It's intended to record an incident, so you only really need a few seconds of video. One hour of video that records over itself is way more than enough for the intended purpose. A 16-32GB card is pointless. Unless of course you feel you need 4 hours of driving footage for some other reason.
Second was the GPS. Since the intended purpose is to record an incident that presumably involves you, the location of said incident will not be in doubt. So the GPS, while cool, has the potential of providing incriminating evidence against you if, let's say, you were driving a bit faster than you should. If this were intended to record life events, and you're taking a scenic route and want to preserve the memories and recall where you recorded what, then sure, GPS makes sense. But I'm buying this to help protect myself in case of a traffic incident, and that's the only purpose, so I axed the GPS and saved a couple of bucks.
The most likely scenario is that someone runs into me and the camera records it, I remove the camera and show the police that responds in case there is a dispute as to who hit whom. I may then choose to download the file to my PC when I get home to preserve it, just in case.

Big Brother crap! I have a drive wise hooked up and they say they only use the braking, speed and time of day but is that really true???

The 801 I ordered supposedly has 8GB internal memory, so we'll see.

OMG Amazon just can't get this right! I ordered the 801 with GPS logger via Amazon Prime. Sure enough it shows up without the GPS logger. Returned that one and reordered the same thing again. 5 days later since that Prime order, still nothing... I'd tell Amazon Prime to go F themselves if I didn't want the camera so bad

I agree but again it is what the buyer intends to use it for and what they want. I think you may want to think about that gps stuff too! I know we have a black box which in the case of an accident they can retrieve all factors of speed and location! This bothers me in a sense because if states it is not to be used or shared but when has that ever stopped the government??

I agree for accident purposes you should be good to go with the internal memory. I don't plan on using a card either. Unrelated thanks for pointing me to the Low profile Avs guard. I'm thinking about getting the aero one.

You are correct,, I forgot to mention the mileage also. You can go online and check each trip and grade rating they give you for braking, mileage, speed and the part I don't like the time of day ratings. so if you drive during certain times they have a higher risk assessment. But I think they can get more info than that!
