We just towed out TT across state to DOW CREEK campground in Hoodsport WA.....(look it up its beautiful here)...............360 miles from home.
At one point, we had a 40 MPH headwind, a 7% grade and I was consistently at 3,000 RPM to maintain a little less than 60 MPH. This lasted for about 100 miles (the wind, not the hill!) --- and we got about 5.5 mpg during that time.
I would have hated to do that with a 26 gallon tank, as the only place there was to fill up charged about 30 cents more a gallon for gas. As it is, once we got out of the wind, I reset the MPG, got 10.5 MPG the rest of the way, and still got to our location with 1/2 a tank left..................yes, I filled up on the way, but not where I would have HAD to with the smaller tank.........

The logic behind that is, gasoline is quite flammable, combustible and explosive, whereas diesel is quite the opposite. I hope this helps.

This is not true that you cant find a larger replacement tank for a gas vehicle. Just check out transfer flow, they make them for the super duty gas and the toyota tundra.

All that are interested should email them and express your interest in a f150 replacement tank. They do listen to there customers, that's how the tundra tank was made.

I wonder where you would put a larger tank? Just make it deeper I suppose.

So I tried the squeeze extra fuel into the tank at the pump today with all these reports of getting more than capacity in.
No dice. When pump kicks out and I try so slow feed more gas spews out on the ground from behind the has filler. Some vent hoses or something. Goes all over my leaf springs onto the ground.
Now to take it to the dealer for a non sealed fuel system. Unless one of you has an explanation I'll buy.

I want a plastic tank so that condensation won't collect in the bottom with the zillion freeze thaw cycles we have up here.

Folks have replaced the 26 with the 36 just by buying the OEM tank and OEM straps... they are the same basic size, the bigger tank is just taller.

You can get a flash on you computer to adjust for the tank and you are off and running. There is a thread on here someone where someone has done it, look around.
