Damn I would love this. I know this has probably been covered somewhere in the thread but.... I have an '09 with Sync. If i got a ipad mini would the screen at the top still show or would I blindly have to use the steering wheel controls?

If I got a permanent mount how would charging work? Is there anyway it could start charging when the car turns on so I could tweak it to turn on and skip the lockscreen when it starts charging?

You could get a mifi hotspot but you would have to pay a monthly data fee

wifi ipads do not have gps chips inside. they do make bluetooth gps modules for ipad, they're like $100 or so. You would also need a mifi for internet access or an offline map program.
