custom interior changeover
#61
So its getting warmer out finally and work has continued on the interior changeover. I've got one door done to make sure I liked it. I used the VHT vinyl dye (not paint) for the black part of the door (this stuff is awesome!) and I used the brushed titanium vinyl wrap for the switch panel and door accent. I am still trying to find a better paint to match the brushed titanium color for the speaker cover but am getting close. Here is the finished passenger door panel compared to the stock driver door panel.

That vinyl dye looks awesome. I hate the odd combinations of gray that my STX has in the interior on the doors. As with the other 2 guys, I'm very interested in the durability!

I decided I would experiment on the cover to my fuse panel. I figured if it didn't hold up well I could either replace it cheaply or it would be well hidden back under the passenger foot area and no one would notice. Knowing that i could write it off as a complete loss if need be I was prepared to put this stuff through some serious testing. I prepped per the instructions and used the vinyl die, it went on well and dried fairly quickly. Even after a few hours I was unable to scrape any off with my fingernail with significant pressure. After a day, I took a green 3m scrub pad to it and vigorously scrubbed and could not remove it at all. It was at this point that I decided it would hold up well enough to proceed.
I tried both the vht matte black and the vht satin black. I found that if the matte black was scraped with a fingernail or something hard, it would not remove the color but it would almost "burnish" it and leave that area with a higher sheen than the surrounding area and the satin black didn't have this problem so I stuck with the satin black.

Im not sure on how long it will last but considering it is a dye rather than a paint, I would think pretty long. I was trying to decide between wrapping or painting but most vinyl wraps will only last a few years before losing adhesion, fading or looking worn so I decided I would try this. I put a few trim pcs through the ringer with tests before I decided to do the door panel. Last thing I wanted was to have this stuff fail, chip, or something along those lines.
