I did the opposite - used a powdercoated weld-on tip and added set screws in case it needs removal and recoating in the future:

Really like the look of that, never even considered doing anything other than the cheap stainless steel set-screw types.

What do you think is under that powder coat or paint?

looks really awesome... kinda wondering if they will hold up to the beating of racks, sand, salt and debris coming off the rear wheels

That's why I didn't weld it on - powdercoat is tough but only so much.

So far no chips.

That looks good, never thought about doing it that way, so far no chips on mine, he used a hight heat primer and paint so hopefully everything will hold up just fine...

I am kind of thinking about having my gunsmith do an electroless nickel plate on my exhaust tip with a brushed finish. That stuff is pretty tough, though not at all the look you are going for. The finish holds up to 2 weeks of salt immersion and is bonded to the metal rather than put on it so it should hold up well. All that unrelated stuff aside, everyone's tips look mean. Sick idea, and good execution.

First, I cleaned the pipe (as far back as the bracket) and sprayed it with black DEI hight temp silicone header wrap paint. It has a satin sheen. Can be used on bare metal as well as wrap.

The first time around I used PJ1 muffler paint which burned off completely after about a month.

We'll see how well this stuff holds up ...
