Default Crappy mpg towing rv with ecoboost

I have a new 2014 ecoboost that is hopefully going to replace my ageing 06 F350. The new truck has a ton of power! But this comes at a price I guess. I pulled a 7000lb RV about 200 miles and only got 7mpg. I have a 5star tow/performance tune. Truck has 3.55 rear end. It was amazing how well it pulled and maintained speed. I locked out 6th gear as it seemed to like 5th gear better. Im just not impressed with the fuel economy. Truck has 3k miles on it. My speeds stayed right at 60-65. Any idea why the mpg was so bad? At 7mpg i may go back to pulling with the old diesel it would average 10mpg.

It is what what it is....7000lb pull with no issues...slow down to 55-60 and get 8 mpg.

Turbos are thirsty, I wouldn't expect any better mileage.

Slow down maybe.

93 octane will help.

I have the same truck and run 10-12.5mpg with my 8800# dry weight camper.

Keep it in sixth and tow haul. What kind of terrain are you pulling? Highway or some stop and go.

And why would you keep it in 5th? Tow haul mode and put her in drive.

Welcome to the wonderful world of towing with a gas powered engine. I can't recall any gas engine that got good MPGs while towing heavy. But some tow way better than others and the Eco ranks near the top for towing effortlessly.

I got 11.7 mpg towing 7,000 lbs with my 2012 5.0 with 35" tires. I'll post the vid as soon as it gets done uploading.

incredible power no doubt. very smooth! Ill try better fuel and see how it does on the return trip on Sunday. Could also be this crappy ethanol they make us run here in the Dallas area. The reason i kept in 5th is it wouldnt stay in 6th. It kept dropping to 5th. wind wasnt too bad there are some mild hills out west of Ft Worth though.

I definitely need tow mirrors and some LT tires though!

Keep as little ethanol as possible. Get regular even if the state mandates a certain %.

Gotta keep in mind, the EcoBoost was meant to have the power of a big V8 but the MPG of a V6. Most don't understand that's not at the same time.

Great power when towing, better MPGs when not towing since for the majority of drivers don't tow that often.
