Default Copying Keys

I have a 2013 XLT and the key with the fob built into the key. I'm guessing not, but can I make simple copies of the key? If not what's the cheapest way to make a spare key if you don't care about the keyless entry fob?

You can make spare keys but without a transponder in the key (computer chip) it Is only a spare key. The key fob is only for remote access, ex keyless entry.

The walmart here have the ability to program keys they cut. Not sure if they carry ford double sided keys. Maybe locksmiths. Even with the newer trucks 2013 you can I believe program extra keys with the transponders in them to operate the truck.

You can make a cheap copy, but it won't start the truck. It's only good for unlocking doors/tailgate. The keys have an RFID chip. You can eBay a low-price chipped key and then have a locksmith cut it. The owners manual has the procedure for programming extra keys and/or fobs.

I bought an integrated key/fob from eBay and had my favorite locksmith cut it, as well as a cheap copy. My local DIY centers refuse to cut the cheap keys, probably because that key won't start the vehicle and they get too many complaints about that.

I have a 2010 FX2 and bought a flip key from e-bay. Wal-mart cut it with no trouble here in texas. Works everything. Lock/unlock, and starts as well as working my aftermarket remote start.

I have been looking at those for sometime but worried how long they will last. Also how is programing the factory keyless and remote start?

A long time ago, I ended up with a car with only 1 working key. I then found that to get a 2nd one working, that you had to go to the dealer and spend $75 to get them to program the ECM to work with it, plus the dealer cost for the key. If I would have had 2, then I could add a 3rd by myself.

Since then, I have always made sure to have 3 keys for a car. That way I can add the new one myself for quite a large savings. For my 2012 XLT, I found a key with the remotes on it from EBay for well under $20. I also wanted a bare key to put in my wallet simply to unlock the door if I somehow got locked out. I took the key from Ebay to HomeDepot and had them cut it. They were somewhat worried about cutting it because they didn't want any liability issues if it was mis-cut. I had them cut the bare key from their rack first, tested that it worked, and then after assuring them that I wouldn't make them pay for a new blank if it didn't work, they cut the remote enabled key as well.

The total cost was somewhere around $15... That's for the remote blank, the bare key and cutting them both.
