If done correctly and in ample application, undercoating can have very good road noise sound deadening benefits.

[quote=HOGSONTHEROAD;685929]I got an estimate of $350 to spray TST undercoat and rust prohibitor. quote]

I had my '09 done by TST in Toledo, they did fantastic work. I was turned on to them by another co-worker who has older mustangs and a truck who has gone thru the gammut of undercoatings. The rust prohibitor has been on his truck now for 4 years and I was impressed so had mine done last year.

For the guys who say it will trap moisture, but no protection will allow salt/rust just as bad and likely worse. My '97 I scrapped for cfc, all the bottom rocker panels were gone. The bottom rear of the cab I was able to poke a hole directly inside. Since I keep my trucks for a long time, it just made sense to have it done. The application they did did not plug up my drain holes on the doors, the application doesn't run after being applied.

I wouldn't worry about the sound deadener unless you are planning an elite sound system. I didn't notice any significant change with the undercoating since the truck is really quiet to begin with.

i also live in sw pa , i work in aviation so i was able to get access to some really good corrosion prevent, but i believe the bottom line is to wash the underside of your truck as much the top in winter

The Line-X stuff lasts forever... if I lived in areas where the streets are salted, it would be a no-brainer, assuming a shop that doesn't plug up the drain holes.

I'm hearing that the undercarriage is rust proofed using a chemical called TST and not LINE=X. Line -X is most commontly used in truck beds.

For now I think I need to hold off as we are in the middle of winter and the streets are already salt covered. Would be difficult to drive 25 miles and keep the bottom clean this time of year.

Had mine done as a dealer option. They threw it in actually as part of the deal. They even did in the wheel wells which looks good too. My friend's truck purchased about a month after mine was not undercoated and his is a rusty mess underneath. Mine still looks black and new under there. It's self healing too, so if it gets scratched or nicked, it heals over once warm. Lots of salt here in the DC/MD area.

FYI - they clean the underbody before they put the stuff on. So what do you drive in the winter then if your truck sits at home???

Very good Info. Is it worth the $350 then? I don't put that many miles on my truck and hope to keep the truck as long as possible. Primary reason for buying it was the towing ability over the silverado 1500 plus going from a extended cab to a crew cab was like night an day. No more mud on the back of the seats from my son getting in and plenty of room to fit 2 adults with leg room.

I will plan on looking for the next available opportunity to get it undercoated as its a 1 shot deal and forget it. No yearly maintenance and as long as the the drain holes aren't plugged I think we are in good shape.

I really like so far. They do have lifetime warranty on the undercoating. If you see any chips or other issues they will reapply/fix for free. I have almost 34K miles on my truck and live to the state north of you, the amount of salt they use is, well, absurd. So far, my truck bottom looks black.
