Considering a GEAR change.... Need real world advice
#41
Ok fellas, as the title says I am going to be installing a Detroit TrueTrac & I am considering replacing my Gears while its torn down. Unfortunately installing a TrueTrac requires removing the Carrier & pressing Bearings, so now's the time to change my Ratio, as the only extra labor cost would be replacing the Pinion & while that's out, a new Pinion Seal can go in too.
Here's what I am working with....
2013 F150 FX2 (2WD) Crew-Cab (4 full size doors) short-bed (5.5 ft) 5.0 Coyote V8
3.31 Gear Ratio, 9.75" Ring Gear, 34 Spline, without e-locker
Considering....
3.73 Gear Ratio, while installing a Detroit TrueTrac
Question is this....
How much would it affect MPG & how much "seat of the pants" would be gained ??
I am considering the 3.73 because I've had several trucks with the 3.73 & I know it pulls well. With that said, I honestly don't currently pull much at all with my truck. BUT, I swear the 3.31 Gears feel weak, according to my butt (lol)

What I really want to give you the heads up about is the E-locker. We had new 4x4 250 super duties with service beds at the mine. I have driven in some muck in the past but never HAD to get there. I found the E-Locker a COMPLETE waste of money. Sure, it worked great up to about 30 mph then it turns itself off. So before you go and make any serious decisions over the locker I would get the specs on what it does before you buy it. I would not spend the money on it. I had limited slip in the front and and a mechanical locker in the back of my land crusher. I could go anywhere I wanted.

the gearing change your thinking about will offer a bit of improvement.

The TrueTrac is an amazing unit, very smooth/quiet & no wearable parts (Helical Gear Driven) "mechanical"

Sorry to awaken a dead thread but I'm looking to re-gear my 2013 F150 from 3.55 to 4.10. I do have 34" MT tires and notice the power loss even with my 5-star tune. I found a reputable shop not to far from me that is willing to do the work but there are 2 things I'm unsure about. One, will the 4.10 gears fit in the front 4wd carriage or will it have to be swapped out? Secondly, this shop mainly stocks Yukon gears. I've read good and bad about Yukon and wonder if it's the way to go. The shop is quoting me about $1800 parts & labor for the job.
Thanks in advance for any and all feedback.

You didn't mention your tire size. 3.73 is standard on FX4 with regular size tires and 4.10 is on the Tremors with regular tires or the Raptors with 34.5.
As for real experience, don't get 4.56. I'm regretting it big time and am about to change again to 4.10. Also make sure to get a set of Ford gears.

Edit: This was for the OP, didn't realize it was an old thread. General rule is you always go up two gear sizes at least so that would put you at 3.73s at least.
It really isn't that crazy. I was going to suggest going 4.10s depending on your driving habits. If you split up your driving, what percentage is city vs highway? Unless it's like 75% highway 25% city I would go with 4.10s.
At a 34" tall tire 4.56s would be just slightly more aggressive than what you would want to use. 4.56s with 35s. I used to run 4.88s with 37s and it was perfect.

As far as the YUKON Gears... Have no fear, Yukon is what I purchased also, they are very quiet & my Shop recommended Yukon, based on his experience.
If $1800 is to do BOTH axles & installation, I think that's a reasonable price. Thinking back (this was done awhile ago) I feel like I spent $1400 on my axle. However, I also purchased a Detroit TrueTrac, new Bearings/Seals & a fancy Diff. Cover. Plus my buddy cuts me a good rate on the shop labor.

I have 2 ELD's and a TT. I'll take the TT over the ELD any day of the week. One of these days the aforementioned equation is going to change when the 13-150 (my daily driver) gets an ELDectomy and has a TT installed.

My Truck is 2wd so I can not answer your question relating to the Front Axle. The "shop" should be able to answer that.
