Considering a GEAR change.... Need real world advice
Ok fellas, as the title says I am going to be installing a Detroit TrueTrac & I am considering replacing my Gears while its torn down. Unfortunately installing a TrueTrac requires removing the Carrier & pressing Bearings, so now's the time to change my Ratio, as the only extra labor cost would be replacing the Pinion & while that's out, a new Pinion Seal can go in too.
Here's what I am working with....
2013 F150 FX2 (2WD) Crew-Cab (4 full size doors) short-bed (5.5 ft) 5.0 Coyote V8
3.31 Gear Ratio, 9.75" Ring Gear, 34 Spline, without e-locker
Considering....
3.73 Gear Ratio, while installing a Detroit TrueTrac
Question is this....
How much would it affect MPG & how much "seat of the pants" would be gained ??
I am considering the 3.73 because I've had several trucks with the 3.73 & I know it pulls well. With that said, I honestly don't currently pull much at all with my truck. BUT, I swear the 3.31 Gears feel weak, according to my butt (lol)

Have you tried the basics? Throttle reset, KAM reset? How about a programmer?

Although I didn't do anything with those options & honestly don't know why I'd want too
Either way, I am curious of the changes the Gear Ratio would provide

Kam will reset the trans into its factory settings. They learn your driving habits over time and this reset can help improve the shifts.
Same thing with the throttle. Reset it and it will help improve the throttle response.
I try and reset both every few months.

Like you said, a shorter gear will improve you're towing experience, especially with a 5.0 that makes its torque in the higher RPMs. You'll notice more pep coming off a stand-still and downshifts may feel like they have a bit more grunt behind them, in non-technical terms...
I don't have any first hand experience, but I've heard (and it makes sense) that city MPG improves while highway MPG decreases with a shorter gear. Going from 3.31 to 3.71, I'd be surprised if you get more than a 0.5-1 MPG change on average.
IMO, if you're not towing much, the 3.31 is fine unless you have oversized tires. I get by in manual mode when i want to force my 5.0 to rev. A gear change is next on my list this spring, and I'm not planning on swaping in anything lower than a 4.10. I personally don't see going from a 3.31 --> 3.73 to be worth it.
Then again, while your in there... Its your call. In theory, a 3.73 will give you more pep, but I'm not sure if its enough to notice. If I were you, and my diff was already apart, I'd throw in a 4.10 at least.

You didn't mention your tire size. 3.73 is standard on FX4 with regular size tires and 4.10 is on the Tremors with regular tires or the Raptors with 34.5.
As for real experience, don't get 4.56. I'm regretting it big time and am about to change again to 4.10. Also make sure to get a set of Ford gears.

This - I wish when I was putting lockers in the pickup that I would have went to steeper gears. The 3.55's are OK because I'm running stock 17" wheels, but with 4.10's your options are open.
You'll need a tuner too, to fix the speedo and the shift points. I recommend 5STAR.

Ok, I just spent a good while looking online & while every video I find for TPS Reset happens to be on an EcoBoost, I would assume that procedure can be done across the board (I have a 5.0 Coyote)?
Also my SCT X4 Tuner has the ability to do a KAM Reset & after calling SCT, that means Keep Alive Memory. Although he seemed unsure as to what exactly that all reset's. Anyone has specific knowledge who has an SCT X4 Tuner?
P.S. I already got the Tuner, so Speedo corrections are covered

FWIW, I went from 3.31 to 4.10 in my STX. Engine runs about 500 RPM faster, gas mileage dropped about 1 MPG. Tows **WAY** better, dragged ~8000# enclosed car hauler 3000 miles last September, no issues at all, ~8 MPG at 70-75 MPH.
