Default Considering a 2013 and could use some tips...

Hi all - I'm looking at a possible downsizing (payment) of trucks. Have my eye on a 2013 F-150 S-Crew XLT 4x4, V8 65K miles, with 3.55 and 36G tank, Trailer Tow Pkg, Convenience Pkg.

I've been a Ram owner for the last few years and have a 2017 Laramie that is loaded. I know I'm likely crazy, but I drive very little and figure I'm paying for a truck that mostly sits in my garage, so would like to lower payment and still have a capable truck that I'll enjoy as a daily driver as well.

Anyway, I've done some general reading and the 5.0 V8 is a proven engine and I'm looking for some additional tips on specific items to check for on this 2013 F150. It is a one owner vehicle local and being CPO it *should* be a solid truck right (right??). But are there any specific service items to ask or check on? While I'd like to make a move to a 2015 for the newer body and updated V8, that sort of defeats the purpose of saving some cash...

Thanks for any feedback/advice.

I don't have to tell you that the 5.0 is better in the aluminum body and is crazy fast for 2018.

With the 13 and 14 year's tho, it's still a fast truck and extremely capable truck if you had to work it.

You're gonna hear about the '5.0 knock'. Even if the truck you're looking at has a faint noise, it's not an issue that'll keep it from running well past 150,000 miles without issue.

Look who's telling you what to buy. The Coyote guys (me) will tell you the 5.0. The Eco guys will tell you a twin turbo 6.

They both get the same mileage. That's a fact now.
The eco is better at 0-30mph. The 5.0 is better from 30 to 60mph. Then they're the same. Its all a wash in the end.

Doesn't sound like you tow a lot. Basically it boils down to what makes you happy.
Driving and hearing a V8 (which ford really nailed) or the sound of turbo's spooling up. Both get the job done.

If the truck looks to be well maintained and you can get it for a fair price, I can't think of any reason not to. I picked up an immaculate '13 back in April with 51,000 mi. and so far I love it. I've already put 18,000 miles on it. -- That makes me cringe a little, but I didn't buy it to shut it in the garage and look at it. That's what the 350 is for...

Hi Perry - I'm in NorCal as well, do you mind me asking what you paid or what you considered "fair"? The truck is at Roseville Ford (Future Ford) and right now OTD is about $28.5k - with full pay off on my Ram ($34.5K). Listing price on the F150 was 28.9k.

I paid 31.5 (even) OTD. In my case the truck was a Lariat Ltd. package with every option that I'm aware of. It was ordered in by the original owner at the dealership where I bought it. Myself and the family farming operation has bought a boat load of ford trucks and cars from this dealer (Corning Ford, I know Benny Brown the owner) so I beleive them. I know that number will seem high to some, but its a 6.2/3.73/ELD/4x4. HARD to find on the open market, especially such a pristine example.
I'd been looking for one of these for a couple years and then stumbled (almost literally) across it while helping a friend who asked me to help him shop for a truck last April. After a quick test drive, it was going home with me, come hell or high water!
Sorry, I got long winded again (not me). To address your question, I'd wave 27.5 OTD at them and see if they either bite or counter. You'll get people who can quote KBB chapter and verse, but sometimes if you like something and you want it, you just have to take the plunge and not get all wrapped up over the last few hundred dollars. There was a couple times during the purchase process that I started to get hung up on the final price (31.5 otd) but that all went away as I hit the throttle getting on the freeway going home!
Give me a stock #, I'd like to see it.

Ok, I saw it.Kodiak brown w/Adobe interior, same colors as mine except I'm 2-tone, KB over gold. It looks to be immaculate! It's a nice mid-trim level. Not super heavily optioned but still PLENTY comfortable. Open at $27 otd. You can always go up, and they can always come down. I think its a very nice truck.

I know this isn't quite your question, but I just downgraded from a 2017 to a 2013 and I'll tell u what I found out.

Insurance is cheaper (probably from not having aluminum body)
It seems to not get thrown around as much when hitting potholes.
Sync 2 is much cooler looking/customizable but nowhere near as fast/user friendly as Sync 3

Expect surface rust if it's from anywhere that gets snow. I almost didn't buy mine because I was concerned about rust that I saw. After I had it inspected by Ford, they said it's mostly just surface rust and can be reversed/protected with just some simple rustguard type spray cans and elbow grease.

Good Luck!

Does the rear window defroster work?

Is there any rust starting to show on bottom cab corners?

It's N.Calif. near Sacramento. No snow, no salt.

For mine, everything is great. Defroster works. Just rusty exhaust and a couple suspension components. All rubber boots are in good shape. After I cleaned it up, a lot of it was that reddish clay dirt... I used a lot of simple green and no touch tire cleaner. Only a couple specs of rust in the lower inside door jam, but I think I can get rid of it
