No offense intended, I don't use a GPS, I use a road map. Works every time its tried, no batteries required. Walmart has a great Road Atlas for about $8 bucks.
Hmm...so many ways I can respond to this. Your road map may cover the interstates and other major roads but how about folks that travel around and don't want to carry multiple maps for one state with them? I used to do that many years ago. It was a drag having paper maps for every county or region I traveled to.
How about the folks that simply like to glance at the compass (me included) and know which direction they're heading? They're very reliable, easy to use and require very little learning to master them.
If you choose to be a luddite that's your problem, not ours. I've been using some form of GPS since probably 2000 and find it invaluable and yes, I can read a map just fine.
Thanks again for the clarification. Lol. I miss my compass and feel it is well worth 60 bucks to know for sure which direction I am going when in unfamiliar places. If no one wanted them Ford would not have that option.
I use GPS sometimes...on long trips that aren't point a to point b which is about once a year. However, I always back that up by personally going over the route GPS has formulated for me. I was reminded very recently that GPS is far from perfect and was very glad I stuck to my old habits.
I'm curious as to why anyone would want a built in compass.
Its not like a ship or an airplane.
I have one built in, but never use it, I always know where I'm going. If I stayed off road, I would buy a real compass that does not require a battery.
You'd rather attempt to use a handheld compass in a strange area, while driving, than glance at a readout in your truck?

I trust nothing electronic. (which is why all airplanes are required to have a standard magnetic compass)
Yes, if I did not know, I would stop the vehicle, walk 100 steps away, and use a handheld compass.
And to the other poster, the Road Atlas covers all states and includes most dirt roads.
Does not take up much room, does not require a battery.
About a year ago, my dad called me saying his GPS got him lost. I got out the Road Atlas and had him fixed in about 15 mins.
Drop the entire headliner, you'll be glad you did.
The rest of your questions are already answered but I'm here already so...
In order:
-"The compass module and wiring is installed completely in the headliner."
-no on the bcm...connects to "main connector above the rear window, rear dome light, front dome light", and to quote myself again..."The compass module and wiring is installed completely in the headliner."
"I purchased the module and wiring assembly for the 2011 XL I had at the time but never installed it. Works fine on my 2014 XL."
Quoting myself again above...I'd be surprised if this didn't install the exact same way in your '13 STX.
Finally got around to instaaling the compass. Found the module and harness on ebay for $38. Dropped just the driver side of the headliner. Rest was plug and play as you described. Works great and is nice to have a compass again. Thanks.
I installed my compass today. I ordered the harness and module off ebay for about $50. When I got the headliner pulled down I noticed my harness had plugs for lighted visors and the new harness did not. I didn't want to loose those, as my wife always complains about not having a light on her vanity mirror. Instead I pulled the compass plug, wires and pins from the new harness and ran those wires through the headliner to the existing plug.
The wires are the Green & Purple, Blue & White, and the right most black wire.
Closed everything back up, drove in circles and now I have a working compass.
Is this the same module that the XLT style cluster needs in order to display the compass? Since I've upgraded my STX cluster to the XLT style, for the compass it only shows - - . I have attempted to set the zone and calibrate numerous times with no success.

Your compass won't calibrate unless you have all of the parts. If you didn't have the compass before installing the cluster than you don't currently have the compass parts. Just putting it on the screen doesn't mean it will calibrate.
I don't know if these are the right parts for your truck but do know you need the compass module for it to work.

Thank You for your response jdunk54nl. I will install these parts and see what I get. If I don’t get it in the cluster I hope at least I will have it in the center stack display. Whatever happens I will report the results here.
