Cold Air Intake questions

Cold Air Intake questions
Hello to all. I am a rookie to this forum and to trucks (just got my first one two weeks ago). I have some questions on a cold air intake. Sorry if this a repetitive thread, but thanks for the help.
1. I have heard that there is a huge difference in vendors. Any recommendations?
2. I live in Oregon and the K&N is listed as illegal for emissions. Is this a huge deal? Will this be standard across all vendors?
3. Do they cause potential damage? As I have read across this site I realize that they can't void anything unless it is responsible for the damage.
4. I'm looking for it to give me performance, not looks
Thanks for taking the time!

I had performance and mileage improvements. on my '05 5.4. I had a aFe installed.
have a k&N waiting to go on my '09 5.4.
Also coming to compliment it, is a Superchips programmer.

The factory intake is cold air. It takes in air from the driver's side fender.
The only reason to put an aftermarket one in is for looks.
In some cases the aftermarket ones take air in from under the hood - making it a HAI.

The problem with the stock CAI is the choke tube that connects the airbox to the fender,it is only 2". Open up the filter box with a jig saw or similar tool and let it breath.I gained 2 MPG by removing the top half of the filter box. I also gained a seat of the pants much improvement in power.

Yes the Gott's mod yields pretty close to the same flow results as a CAI without the need for retuning. Cheapest and most effective mod you can do.
