Default Cold Air Intake.......

Thinking of putting in a cold air in my 5.4 and was wondering what is a good brand. Of course I looked at K&N but is there a cheaper cold air that still gives that extra kick for HP? Also, is it worth it to put a throttle body spacer when installing a cold air? I am kind of on the fence about the spacer but I def want to put in a cold air.......

Don't waste your money on the throttle body spacer. Most of the CAI kits are priced similar to the K&N FIPK, Airraid may have their Jr. kit which replaces the tube and filter and retains the factory box (not sure if it's out for the new body style yet), it's normally closer to $100 IIRC. Just make sure you get one that has a heat shield so it doesn't draw air after it's been heated by the radiator.

I'm happy with the K&N. Works well and not too loud until you put your foot into it.

I just put the K&N on my truck today. It makes me laugh when you read all the other posts about them (no matter which brand) saying they don't work or they are a waste of money but I think people are being shortsighted or looking for some major performance gains. What I think the haters fail to realize is that, while the claims on the box are mostly overstated, you are still gaining in three areas. It's not like you are gaining in one and losing in another. So maybe you gain 5HP instead of 11, it's a gain, same with torque, if fuel economy increases by an average of even just 1/2 mpg it'll be like gaining 1 gallon per tank. Add that out over the life of the truck or your time as owner and I think they pay for themselves. Todays engines and exhaust systems are so restrictive and choked down that anything you can do to help them breathe easier is going to be a benefit. Doesn't hurt if you get a deal on the product either.

X2!

I also find if you have an aftermarket exhaust, it assists in the sound of it as well!

I added the K&N and then put on the Magnaflow Dual cat back exhaust. Has a great sound to it and makes almost no increase in noise on the highway if your not on the throttle. I was also able to notice an increase in responsiveness and pep to the truck after changing them. Worth the money IMO

Hey guys, I am a newbie to truck mods. I ordered my K&N and it will be here Saturday. Can't wait to put it on. Also I'm looking to change out my exhaust. I've been looking at the flowmaster and I'm seeing ads for Gibson but never heard of them. Has anyone used the Gibson exhaust? What do you guys think about headers? I have a 2009 Platinum. The K&N will be my first mod. I also have an a Brenspeed 87 performance tune. I am thinking about running a true dual exhaust. Any opinions.

OP, I have heard that throttle body spaces are just a waste of money. They don't do anything for your truck, performance wise.
