CNG Ecoboost

Keepin' the lights on!
Intresting. In Albuquerque there's a lot of city buses that run CNG. Not sure what engine they have but it is turbo. A lot of back-up generators for residential and business run off of NG and most are turbo as well.

Most of your CNG transit busses will run the Cummins 8.3. The fuel system uses on "injector" which they call a mixer and sprays it inside the intake manifold right before the throttle body. I would imagine the easiest way to convert it is to run a fogger style set-up similar to what the diesel guys use with propane. Start on gas and feed in CNG and pull gas out. Gotta be real careful, unlike gas, CNG has no rich setting. ALL of the fuel will be burned, you can't choke out like you can a gas motor. This means lotsa melty inside engine parts. I work for a transit agency that is mostly CNG. When they go bad its pretty fun to tear them apart to see the carnage.
I know there is alot of CNG kits out there, but I would seriously look at what they come with. If it was me I would convert a good propane system that will feed in CNG and pull out gas rather than one that just sprays in fuel. You have to really watch the 02 sensors really close. Just 1% off in fuel will turn the EB engine into a coffee table in a few miles. Our busses are always blowing the ef up. And Cummins has been doing this for 20 years...

I read an article in the past couple of months (just can't remember what venue) which stated that Ford is seriously looking at this issue, and will most likely offer it as an option for F-series trucks (dual-fuel gasoline/CNG) at some time in the not too distant future, but no mention of a specific engine size/type.
The need for easily accessable CNG fueling stations (public use) was mentioned as a leading issue, not the technology to make it functional.
I see this as something very viable, even within the next 5 years.

The only reason this hasnt takin off is because big oil and the government make too much money off gasoline and pay the auto manufacturers to not implement these systems.

The complete conversion kits i have seen for other trucks are very expensive also. My neighbor has like and 85 f150 thats been converted forever and he has a fill tank at his home to refuel.

2012 f150 ecoboost cng conversion
Just had a 2012 f150 ecoboost converted to CNG. As far as I know there has only been two conversions done on the ecoboost, one in Canada and this one in Ohio.
