I find myself very unhappy with the rear suspension in this 2013 RCSB f150 both stock and with flip kit/sway bar/belltech SP shocks! I'm one step away from putting a four link/panhard bar with Qa1 coil overs in it!

Driving over any sort of decent sized bump in the road that affects both rear wheels causes a relatively loud clunk from the rear end. Kind of hard to describe it, but it is loud enough to be heard with the windows up. I notice it every day when I drive over a set of railroad tracks on my way in to work. I would say that I'm usually going 25-30MPH, and the railroad tracks aren't particularly uneven, maybe a 2" bump at most.

I've performed a visual inspection of the rear suspension, and everything looks kosher, but I'm not a mechanic by any means.

Has anyone else experienced similar? I'm on the fence about bringing it into the dealer for this, as I'm not 100% certain that it's not just normal suspension noise. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks!

hey whats up.

here is my problem. ive noticed the same problem with my 2010 ford f150 fx4. any big potholes or bumps I hear a clunk and it drives me crazy. well one day I took off my rear wheel, which was on the driver side and I was looking to see what this clunking could be. and I grabed the whole brake rotor assembly (the whole rotor) and it moves maybe an 8th of an inch and sounds like the same clunking noise that I hear. it moves up and down only not sideways or anything. just seems like the whole rotor itself is loose including the hub. maybe the axle bearing is worn already? the other side does the same as well

I get it on my 2010. Figured out its the bedliner, and the hitch. I only notice it on speed bumps and such.

Id had a similar sound, dealer replaced some worn bushings in the tailgate and all was well. Warranty work too.

I've noticed the stripper pole moves around and makes a clunk.

I will tell you this . . . NEVER spray anything on the leaf springs. and NEVER NEVER spray substances like wd-40, fluid film, or any other type of substances like these on the leaf springs....It will make them shift, and the nylon pad between and on the end of them dont like it.

also, some other members have stated the same issue after they've painted up underneath their truck (like the rear differential that was rusting). The paint can drift onto the leaf springs, and dry, therefore creating a binding situation, and causing the leaf springs to shift and "clunk".

This MAY or MAY NOT be your scenerio, just sharing my experience.
the leaf springs have 2 spring centering bolts to keep them from shifting and adding strength to perch they sit on. as far as your draw bar rattling, take some vinyl tape and wrap around the bar. 2 to 3 tight wraps should do it, cut out for around hole for locking pin.. should be really tight when putting back in or not enough wraps of tape.

barnhartj8,

I recommend taking your truck to your dealer to have them take a look at this concern. They'll be able to diagnose this for you!

I notice this as well. I've wondered if the spare tire is jacked up completely tight, I know there is a spring in the cable assembly that gets compressed when fully tightened. Haven't had a chance to check it yet though.

i have an 05 fx4. for me it sounds like the clunking is changing with centrifugal force (when i turn right the clunk happens on the left side, and when i turn left, the right side). everything seems to be tight under there but i haven't put it on a lift without pressure on the suspension components. its not the hitch reciever, and i removed the spare tire and it still happens. what's really weird is that it seems to be happening louder when the weather is hotter. when it cooled down last week, i didn't really hear it at all...

I'm glad others have pointed out that it was their receiver making the noise. That was my issue as I leave mine in just in case some douche bag gets to close and doesn't hit the bumper.
