Clunk from rear end going over bumps
 

Details on my truck are in my sig, situation is as follows:

Driving over any sort of decent sized bump in the road that affects both rear wheels causes a relatively loud clunk from the rear end. Kind of hard to describe it, but it is loud enough to be heard with the windows up. I notice it every day when I drive over a set of railroad tracks on my way in to work. I would say that I'm usually going 25-30MPH, and the railroad tracks aren't particularly uneven, maybe a 2" bump at most.

I've performed a visual inspection of the rear suspension, and everything looks kosher, but I'm not a mechanic by any means.

Has anyone else experienced similar? I'm on the fence about bringing it into the dealer for this, as I'm not 100% certain that it's not just normal suspension noise. Any insight would be appreciated.

I have that too (occasionally)...I've not yet taken mine to the dealer about it. I'll mention it at my next oil change.

I took my truck to the dealer for something else, but when it was in the air and side by side with another truck with the same wheelbase, they noticed my leaf springs could be moved by hand and replaced them under warranty. Might be worth looking into.

I saw a thread oh here the other day talking about a block of steel bolted to the frame with no apparent use. In some cases this block is loose and knocking/rattling. Can't find the thread to link to.

i had same thing .. found that my jack was not secured in the 'frame' under the seat and when i took turns and had a bump in turn i would hear something as well

check that out as well
or maybe one of the jack extention rods hitting the inisde of the 'compartment'

Does it sound like a shock going through the bed then yes I have experienced it too. The first time I heard me and the wife both looked at each other with a WTF look on our faces.

My 2013 XLT makes that clunk noise when I go over the speed humps in my neighborhood. If I go over them very slowly I do not notice it. I have not had a chance to investigate if something is loose yet... might look into the jack as previously mentioned.

I'm pretty meticulous when it comes to trying to re-create issues like this, comes from being a software tester for so many years. :blink:

I'll take out all of the stuff under my rear seats (including the jack) tonight after work and try to re-create the issue.

Assuming I can still re-create it, I'll fire up my iPhone and try to capture the sound from in the cab, and get the Ford dealer to look at it next week.

More than likely...your leaf springs are shifting. Had this issue with a Chevy Silverado.

Also, had this issue with my 2011 F150.

I will tell you this . . . NEVER spray anything on the leaf springs. and NEVER NEVER spray substances like wd-40, fluid film, or any other type of substances like these on the leaf springs....It will make them shift, and the nylon pad between and on the end of them dont like it.

also, some other members have stated the same issue after they've painted up underneath their truck (like the rear differential that was rusting). The paint can drift onto the leaf springs, and dry, therefore creating a binding situation, and causing the leaf springs to shift and "clunk".

This MAY or MAY NOT be your scenerio, just sharing my experience.
