I use my cigar lighter for my Garmin GPS and agree it's a pain to remember to unplug it. I would be interested in how easy it would be to convert it to turn off when the truck is off. If I am not mistaken, the 12v plus in my console is always on also. It seems like a bad design.

Grab a relay from an auto parts store (only need 30A or whatever the fuse is) and then run a wire to a switched source (one on the radio wiring works) as the activation feed for the relay. Your constant 12 goes to the other poles. It will turn off with the truck and turn on with the truck.

Thanks for all the replies. I have been away, and despite my owners manual saying otherwise, I have been using the cigarette lighter for the occasional phone charge while the gps was plugged into the regular 12 volt accessory. All good like you guys said. It would be nice if at least one of them wasn't hot all the time though.
