Default Change oil light keeps coming on.

I have a 2011 fx4 5.0 and I had my oil changed at 11,473. I currently have 12812 on it and the "change engine oil soon" light keeps coming on. I don't have to change it for at least another 15,000 miles. What's the deal?

Oil life probably wasn't reset. Just reset it to 80%.

That is funny-- I have a 2012 Lariat 4X4 and had 7690 miles on it . The oil life read 5% and the oil light NEVER CAME ON. I decided to have the oil changed anyway.

As said above you probably need to reset the oil life indicator. You can do it in the information screen. There is a section in quick tips book that comes with your truck.

Another 15000 miles that seems a little long. Im sure your oil life moniter will recomend a change much sooner and it needs to be reset when you do an oil change. I set mine at 80% and it shows I need service around 8000 miles. I use motercraft full synthetic oil I probably could run it longer but cost of oil VS cost of moter I will stay on the conservetive side

I hope u guys are not thinking that it actually monitors the oil. From my understanding it is on a "timer" regardless of the oil quality.

No it's not just a timer. Different driving styles, climates, loads, etc, will all factor in to how long or how quickly that oil life monitor goes down and changes. If you read in the manual it actually takes many things into account to make those adjustments to the frequency of an oil change reminder.

However, you are correct in that it does not actually monitor the oil itself. But at the same time it is NOT just a timer.

Sometimes the KISS method is the best method for explaining some things... Especially when it comes to technology.... Most people just need to know its a "timer" and not worry about that other stuff
