Issue: Cannot default the My Ford Sync system (without Navigation) to Bluetooth audio

Some users are having an issue with when they turn the ignition on their My Ford Sync system reverts to Line-In even though they were using Bluetooth audio when they turn their vehicle off. They would like to have the system revert back to Bluetooth audio instead of having to go through the menus to be able to get to Bluetooth audio or use the voice commands. A Ford customer service representative FordIVTteam actually joined in the conversation and gave the reason why Ford made this change (as it would previously revert to Bluetooth) and the best method to get back to the source they wanted.

Default They just can't get it right

I took the plunge today and updated from SYNC Gen1 - V3.2.2 to SYNC v4.4. Followed the instructions to get the files on the USB, and tried to follow the convoluted install instructions. I should have known there'd be problems when the instructions say "Shortly after installation has begun, SYNC says “Installation Complete.” Ignore this message."

Anyway, I think I figured out the install in spite of their directions and after about 10 minutes it stopped doing whatever it was doing. I re-paired my phone like the instructions said and everything seemed to work fine. At first. I was actually glad that USB2 still worked - I was worried that they'd shut that down.

Went for a drive listening to Bluetooth audio. The song track and artist showed in the display! That was a first for Sync. I shut the truck off to go into a store. When I came out and started the truck, the display still showed the track name/artist of the song I have been listening too, so I thought "wow! they fixed it!". It took me about 10 seconds to realize that the song info on-screen didn't match the music and that the song that was playing was from the USB2 device in the glove box. All I could think of was WTF?

My observations:
  • When the SYNC lady says "Bluetooth audio" it now sounds like she's slurring her words.
  • When the truck starts, the display is initially blank where it used to say "Bluetooth Audio or USB2 or Line In". Completely blank - no indication of the audio source.
  • It takes much longer (3-4 seconds) between pressing the voice button on the stee
ring wheel and getting a prompt to say something.

My conclusions:
  1. Sync now shows the track and artist coming from Bluetooth audio, but if I shut the truck off, the audio feed reverts to USB2 when I start it again, but the display shows the last Bluetooth track info on screen.
  2. Ford or their IT contractors have no idea what they are doing. They've taken a marginal system (at best) and made it worse, more confusing, and slower.
  3. If the developers where I worked tried to produced crap like this they'd be fired. Maybe some have and went to work for Ford.
  4. In trying to find some guidance for all this, I spent a lot of time on owner.ford.com. Now, my company gets paid big bucks to build web sites for both government and commercial clients, so I know what makes a good web site and how to build one. Ford does not and I have to say that IMHO it is one of the worst web sites I have every had to use. They have obviously never heard of heuristic evaluation and design. Nothing is intuitive, the UI is confusing, the design and styles are inconsistent, there are duplicate navigational controls and the overall UX is just agonizing.

In a perverted way it makes sense: if you can't make a basic infotainment system for your cars, and are willing to tolerate year after year after year of declining quality ratings due to your IT systems, why should we expect you to stand up a quality web site to support your products? Whoever runs IT at Ford should be shown the door.

Tomorrow I will try to re-install SYNC v.4.4. I'll do a master reset after the install and see what happens then.

EDIT: I re-installed this morning and got different sequence of prompts. This time it seems more stable, but my fears are correct: USB2 is no longer available.

So now I am looking for a zip file with SYNC Gen1 - V3.2.2 so I can roll back. Anyone have this and willing to share?

I unzipped files into USB drive, my 12 FX4 without MFT will not see the files when I select install...no files found. Any ideas?

Figured it out...USB drive was formatted NTFS...changed to Fat32 and all was fine

For those of you having trouble...

Not sure if this matters, but if you format your flash drive using a Mac and Disk Utility, you can only select FAT, not FAT32. I tried this initially and had trouble. I booted into my Windows partition and was able to format it FAT32.

For my 14 XLT, the directions sent to me by Ford were not even close to accurate. Here's what I had to do. Go to aux line in > menu > Sync - Media > System Settings > Advanced > Install Application. Hit OK on install application then follow the prompts.

The system will say "Installation Complete" after the first phase of the install. That's only the first phase. You're not done yet. The system will reboot, then appear to be doing mostly nothing for awhile (7 or 8 minutes for me). You'll hear "Installation Complete" a second time. It is then done. You'll then have to pair your phone again.

Hope this saves some of you guys from banging your head against your steering wheel like I was doing.

This is what I had to do with my 2012 Lariat as well. I am happy to report that it will now remain on Bluetooth after turning the truck off and back on, and will even resume play from where it left off.

Thank you Ford for listening to your customers and finally fixing this bug.

Good point for those that might be formatting it correctly. I myself was on the phone for an hour yesterday with the Sync team to try and get it installed on my 2013 Fusion to no luck. I get to where you just indicated, but after pressing OK under "Install Application," I get no prompt, just an "Installing Application" that just does nothing. It's irritating because otherwise I wouldn't care if this update didn't have everything that was frustrating me.

Looks like I'll be going to the dealer and probably having to spend money...

The media button scroll now includes bluetooth audio too.
So far I haven't had any problems (I don't use the usb port/s). I'm sort of getting used to how it pauses the audio instead of just restarting, but I guess that makes sense from a design perspective.

Note for any Ford people reading this: I'm glad that you fixed this, really. But the silence to the issue is a real problem. I don't think any of your "team" members here or any I've talked to ever mentioned that these issues were being worked on, and that there might be an update. There are pitfalls with doing that too, but to me it looks like the reps here (and ones I've talked on the phone) don't know what's going on. And that's bad.

Is your truck MFT or Sync?

I've been lurking in this thread for months now. I do not have a F150. I have a 11 MKS with Nav Gen 1 Sync. I installed the 4.4 update and now get metadata etc but my system still defaults to line in. I've pulled the fuse, done a factory reset, done a master reset, and reinstalled the update waiting as long as an hour for the second "Installation Complete". It never comes. So I guess I get all the features this update it supposed to provide except for the one that I really want. I called support the woman told me that I needed to reset my phone... to fix sync defaulting to line in. I'm hoping I've done something wrong during the install. I'm hoping this update will actually do what it says it will do. I wonder if I took it to the dealership if they would be able to fix it now. Hope springs eternal.
