Default Can I Upgrade To A Sync3?

Hello,

I'm looking at a 2012 F150 XLT Texas Edition with a 3.5 Ecoboost with the standard radio. I don't like the radio that came with that gen and I know the 2013 upgraded their radio but this is the only 12th gen truck the dealer is selling. I saw online you can upgrade the radio to My Ford Touch (sync2) and when I look up if you can install Sync3 to get Apple Careplay I saw people talking about upgrading the Sync2 to Sync3 where they just bought a new unit and used the trim that came with their Sync2.

I was wanting to know if it's possible to upgrade this radio from a standard radio to Sync3 and buy the trim to fit it or is it not worth it and I should just get a 3rd party radio that does Apple Carplay/Android Auto.

Thank You,

As far as I know, you cannot go from the sync 1 ( or base radio) to sync 2/3 without an extreme amount of effort. Best bet would be to get an aftermarket stereo that supports CarPlay. Doesn’t look as good, but a lot cheaper.

Thank you, I was lending more towards using a aftermarket radio but was wanting to stick with OEM but I might just do the aftermarket radio. Like you said it'll be cheaper

For the cost of going to Sync 3 (there are companies that sell complete kits) you could get an aftermarket radio capable of wireless carplay cheaper.. It is the route I am going for my 2013 4in radio. Cost is about 1200 for radio I want (AVH-W4500)

i feel like going with sync 3 would be cheaper (not using the complete kit prices). a non-nav unit with everything should be roughly $400~.

Like another poster said, you can't go from syn1 to sync3 without major re-wiring of your truck. You CAN go from sync 2 (2013/14 f150s) to sync 3 just be swapping parts and programming via forscan. But the OP does not have a 13/14.
