Can a car wash cause this, or?

That was not someone trying to break into your truck, unless the person is really dumb. I would say it is from a carwash. sometimes those bristles get caught in cracks and then they pull. I personally do not like those mechanical carwashes. If you have to use a carwash use the high pressure brushless or have someone wash it. The best thing is wash it yourself with quality stuff.

I would definitely get the tows if you have to replace them cause the regular mirror with auto dim is stupid expensive.
Here's some tows on ebay they say til 2011 but I'm sure there same as 2012 someone and say differently.

I'd turn this into the insurance because those standard mirrors are a lot more expensive than even the tow mirrors due to the dimming capability in the drivers side.
When I bought my tow mirrors for the 2010, I researched the heck out of them and found the standard mirrors were over $100 more than the tow mirrors yet at the time, Ford still charged a premium when they offered them as a factory option separate from the Max Tow package.
Also when I had my 2010, before I installed the Tow Mirrors, a high end auto carwash with employees doing the drying, completely folded my drivers side mirror in scaring the crap out of me. I thought it broke it. Even that high end ($20 for wash) car wash didn't have equipment that wouldn't damage a vehicle.

The bristles in a carwash would break before it'd stress the mirror like that, most likely happened from to hot of water temp as another member made a post about his mirrors warping from sitting out in the heat, sounds strangely odd to, but to each his own....

The bristles getting into the gaps and pulling is possible, never thought of that but still seems like a long shot. I don't see stress marks which would be white on the black, showing where the plastic was bent. I still think it's warp from hot water on cold plastic. Water should be warm not hot. Likely some kid had the water just below boiling and it did the damage.

I agree as noted above there are no real marks and you can see where the mounting bolts are as they are now dimples.
If it was warping why did it only happen on the drivers side?
This is really weird. I am going to take it to the dealer and see what he says? If they won't cover it under warranty I have a $500 deductible for comprehensive so insurance won't help.
I don't need tow mirrors as I very rarely tow anything.
Thanks for all the responses!

As you can see the dimples are between the mirror and the damaged edges which looks to me like that damaged edges caused the dimples not whatever caused the dimples caused the damaged edges. I don't see how hitting the mirror would push in the dimples and cause the edges to pop out on opposite sides. If the pressure was up then that would make sense for the top dimple. If the pressure was to the left that would make sense for the left dimple.
On the flip side there are no marks around the edges like someone tried to pry it off.
