a/c stands for air conditioning, just because no Freon is used doesn't mean the air isn't conditioned. our seats cool your butt, doesn't just circulate air.

Well I learned something today, always a good day when you learn something. Thermoelectric device it maybe but the OM for my 2014 F150 does not call the seats climate controlled, only descrbing the functions as heated and ventilated. The climate controlled seats may be restricted to higher class butts than mine, say someone who drives a Lincoln and not a working mans Ford. But then again I might learn something more today or tommorrow.

So after a little more reading as I understand with the Thermo Electric Device air circulation is needed in both the heating and cooling modes. If this is correct then my FX4 does not have cooled seats only ventilated seats as there is no air circulation noted when in heat mode, assuming that one would notice the air flow externally and or hear the fan under the seat.

Took a look at RockinRuby and found the following. With the seats in heat mode, no fan. With the seat AC button selected on my ford touch the fan runs and air escapes from the perforations so my conclusion is that the seats are heated and ventilated using a resistive unit for heating and the fan to circulate cabin air.

Don't know about the trucks but the Lincoln Mkt we have is an 11 and it uses a fan in heat and cool mode both and the air is definately cold coming out of the seats.

I'm not even trying to get into the technical aspect of how our "heated" and "cooled" seats work ... but I have them in my 2014 FX4, and here's what I EXPERIENCE when I use either function:

HEATED: The seat itself seems to have a heating element in both the seat back and bottom ... this element heats the seats like a thermal/heated blanket (ie: electric current running through a wire) ... and there is ALSO a fan that pulls in air from the cabin and forces it through the perforations in the seats, thus moving the HEATED/CONDITIONED air through the seat and towards your body.

COOLED: Same as above with respect to forcing air through the seat, but there is obviously some element that is "cooling" inside the seat, so that the forced air gets COOLED/CONDITIONED as it passes through the seat and pushed against your body.

You can debate all you want, but "conditioned" air is just that ... air that is either heated, or cooled, or has moisture removed, or added, etc. in order to "condition" the air differently than how it exists when pulled into the system. A "fan unit" only takes in air and forces out the same air in the same condition it came in - though it MAY cool a little bit due to the movement of the air.

The PROBLEM is that people equate "A/C" or "Air Conditioning" to "cooling", which is correct SOMETIMES ... but that's actually only part of it. Taking air in and heating it is ALSO "conditioning" the air. It's just hotter air now instead of colder air.

well said, if I may add, "the process of altering the properties of air to more comfortable conditions"

yep ... the whole point that both of us are making, is that a fan just moves air ... any other myriad of systems can "recondition" the air - thus "air conditioning". And all I know is there's something in our seats that generates heat or cold, and there's fan to push air through that "system" to "condition" it ...

but all I really need to know is, I turn on the heated seats and my butt/back warm up ... I turn on the cooled seats and my butt/back get cooler. end of story

If the fan cycles in the heat mode then I'll have to listen/feel closer. I didn't notice.
