I know alot of people on here would like to know that.
Wait people do that??? Turn off the engine and drift down a hill?

i remember about 8 months ago. i guy started a thread saying his tranny made loud banging noises when he did this. he only did it 2 or 3 times before a few people on here told him it wasn't a good idea. i wasn't sure if the o.p was doing this. he just said he was coasting. but i figured i would let him know not a good idea just incase.

When I did it I was going slow & turned it off, then right back on, the noise started when I put it into neutral. Of course it went away when it restarted. This was probably 6 to 8 months ago. I've never had a vehicle I couldn't put into neutral while moving, (until now).

Talked to dealer yesterday, they got trans apart, said planetary gears failed.

doesn't sound good. Are they changing the whole tranny, or rebuilding? did they say anything about your tuner and the warrenty?

Last year when we got some snow. I put mine in neutral when coming to stops. It really helps the vehicle stop faster, because there isn't any power being applied to the wheels.

I've never heard any thing other than normal, but I've never done it and turned off the engine at the same time.

Incorrect, with the accelerator pedal released your engine acts as a brake while still connected to the drivetrain. You will stop quicker in gear than you will in neutral.

I began coasting down hills in neutral, with the engine on, to try and milk gas mileage as you disconnect the engine braking, however I noticed that regardless of whether you're in gear or not the computer will alter the idle speed the same as when you're in gear. I.e. when you're coasting with the truck in drive as you downshift the rpms obviously vary, even when you're in neutral the computer will mimic those rpms. My guess is so when you shift it in to gear the engine and transmission speeds are already matched closely. So I stopped as there is no benefit.

He told me yesterday they would be comparing rebuild with replacement, claims he's pushing for replacement. They didn't say anything about tuner or warranty, wrote it up under warranty, of course I'll find out when I pick it up if they balk or have anything else to say. I put it to stock before taking it in, also I have an Edge Insight CS on it which is just a monitor, explained that to them when I dropped it off.

I had also tried putting it into neutral with engine running & it made bad noises so hadn't done it since.

Have to disagree with that, I've tried it, and it definitely stops faster. I was born and raised in Alaska, and have driven in snow/ice half my adult life. Now I'm talking about the last few feet before the stop sign, and the engine is basically idling. If your engine acted like a brake, how come when you put the truck in gear you start moving without pressing the peddle. Power is still being applied to the drive train, unless you're in neutral.

Try this: let your foot off the brake at a stop light and don't touch the accelerator. Does the truck begin accelerating? Does it continue to accelerate to it's maximum governed speed of 95mph?

Yes the truck will accelerate until it reaches the maximum speed that the drivetrain is capable of maintaining at idle speed, but no more (unless you are headed downhill). Any speed above this point and the engine is acting as a brake. Make sense?

Yes I can see with the last few feet the engine idle speed would be supplying power and make your stop time longer. The 300 feet leading up to it, however, the engine will be braking the truck.
