Tell them to shove it. They aren't referred to as "stealerships" for nothing!!

I may be in the minority here, but I would consider returning the rebate, or at least come to some compromise that worked well for both parties. The incentive was a mistake on their part sure, but the guy that made the mistake is only human. My personal opinion is if you didn't trade a vehicle in then you didn't deserve the rebate to begin with. With that being said, are you legally obligated to return it? No. Are you ethically obligated to return it? That's up to each person to decide. I know these trucks cost a lot of money, but at the end of the day the people at the dealership are trying to make a living too. Just my .02.

I got a $500 student rebate on a '91 GMC that I should not have. The dealer called me a few days after the sale to inform me of that. While I knew it was tough titty on their part, I decided to pay them back half of the rebate since it was their mistake and we would both lose $250 on the deal. I felt like I did the right thing.

Your purchase agreement is a legally binding agreement and cannot be changed without authorization from both parties. Mistakes, whether they favor or hurt you, are legally binding also unless both parties agree to correct them.

Do you think they would call you if they discovered you were eligible for a thousand dollars in rebates they forgot to give you? Not likely.

The only way I'd consider any kind of payment would be if they were going to dock someones
paycheck and I'd pay an even portion of that money directly to that person. But to have
it go into the dealers general operating fund? I don't think so.

Would they give you $1000 if they overcharged you and found the error ?

I had a dealer attempt to do this same sort of thing on a 2011 Ford Edge lease. They negotiated the terms of the deal, we agreed, I signed the papers, and picked my Edge up. About a week later they called to tell me they goofed on the rate and that my payment was going to be increasing 40/month. They wanted to fax the papers right over to have me sign them again. I said not a shot in hell, what are my options? "Well, if you don't sign the papers then you'll have to return the Edge". Ok, I'll have it back this weekend.

At this point I repeatedly called the sales manager for about a week and a half in an attempt to schedule the return of the vehicle. I never ONCE received a returned call. Finally I made contact with the owner of the dealership, who became furious once I explained the situation to them. I received a call back from the OWNER about two hours later telling me that it had all been resolved.

It's cheaper for them to eat their mistake than it is to take a vehicle that has been registered back from the owner. The moment I would have returned the vehicle it would have become "used", which becomes a massive loss for them.

I negotiated my deal via email. When I got to the dealer, the person I had been dealing with was not there, so I had another sales person. We drove the truck and I showed him the email. He was writing it up and noticed that they had included $1000 too much in rebates. He said, let me talk to the boss and came back and said, our word is our bond and we will honor the agreed upon price. We drove it home an hour or so later.

i would say that somewhere in the contract you initialed next to a statement that all the information contained the contract was correct.. since you are receiving money for a trade in when you didn't trade anything it would be a breach of contract... however i doubt the stealership is going to go to court so its a morality issue.. i say keep the money... but i say legally you owe...
