Not completely true. Nitrogen is not as sensitive to temperature change and that's why it's used.
Pro race teams, like NASCAR, use it for that very reason. To keep consistent pressures when they they setup their cars.
For street cars it's the same and somewhat a benefit towards MPGs and tire wear. Without Nitrogen tire pressure will drop in the cold and increase in the heat.

In the aviation industry it is used to control condensation inside the tire helping prevent corrosion due to sudden extreme temperature changes, besides it is inert in case of a ruptured tire.

From what I have read, the only benefit to nitrogen is that the tire will lose pressure at a slightly lower rate than they would if filled with air. The cheaper solution of course is to check your tire pressures regularly and fill with good old 78% N2 when they get low.

I had my 2001 Land Rover Discovery series 2 with nitrogen. It last over 5 years and never lost a single psi
