Bed racks- low profile, easily removable, tonnneau friendly?

I have a bakflip on my 6.5', and I frequently toss mountain bike or kayak in the bed for shorter trips but want to be able to put gear under tonneau plus bike & kayak above for camping trips without going to a roof rack

Require easy on & off (could be daily) and compatible with bakflip (I realize can't full flip it but keep it mounted and enough to open/close tailgate).

These are options I was thinking but want to see your guys

Picture 1:is kind of the goal but has to deal with tonneau AND easy on/off
Picture 2: Option- Backracks rear bar, drops in to bed stake holes I'd just run them front & rear, kayak could direct mount and bike I have a roof rack attachment
Picture 3: Use bedrails and somehow quick release crossbars to them

I'm not sure what you can do about the Kayaks other than strapping them on top of the backflip somehow.

However, this member got creative with bike mounts on the side rails. I'm not sure how far the bakflip extends onto the side rails, but this might be an option?

The Bakflip CS System is a great option but is painful with bike transportation. You can also get the BackRack tonneau adapter kit that would allow for a rack system to mount at the front and a crossbar at the rear. Sort of like this link.

Not sure that's my solution but options are good

Above roofline doesn't work for me due to garage door height, I hit the antenna but not the roof , and I'd rather not have it catching wind on highway.

A member on here has something like this with crossbars and a bed cover. Obviously it would require the cross bars to be removed to operate the cover, but they fit beside his Bak cover on the bed rails. I wish I could find that thread...

Edit, found one of the threads. https://www.f150forum.com/f2/what-to...-setup-390851/

Hmmm wonder how easy those towers detach though, that looks like a clean setup but some days I may run home from work toss the kayak on to take it out for an hour and then come home and would want to remove the rack. I do like how it still leaves the stake holes for use or adding bullrings

The crossbars detach by releasing a lever if I remember correctly. It's really just the roof rails that most SUV's have on top of them but mounted to the bed.

Not quite what you are going for, but it's a vantech rack with and bakflip MX4. The rails are mounted to an 6.5ft aluminum flat bar and then attached to bullring stake pocket mounts. The truck is unmodified in any way and all of it can be removed without damage to the truck.

The bakflip is removed for this trip to allow vision out the rear window.

Are there not bolts down the length of the channel? I'd say that's damage to the vehicle if removed...

jheizer 09-27-2017 04:50 PM

I haven't built this yet so it might suck, but my current plan is to buy some bull rings where the ring part unscrews and the threaded base is left. Then get a AL square tube, bolt that down to the ring base, and screw fork holders into the square tube. Run that across the front of the bed and tie them off to rings on the back. I've bought everything but haven't needed it so haven't built it yet.

Edit: It was these I believe. I bought them a while ago. http://www.autozone.com/tie-down-and...tem/236003_0_0

Damn that's a pretty impressive setup . My kayak is only a 10' and I'd only carry one bike so think I can do both with my over tonneau idea. Your full setup would be overkill but I may be able to leverage your rail idea

I think the channel is bolted to flat stock under it, that flat stock is mounted to bed at the rear with those two allen heads in to the stake pocket.

Ah, you're probably right.

tcp2 09-28-2017 10:45 AM

That should work. As long as you can get the bolt down into the threads of the stake pocket mount and have some overlapping material toward the front and back of the stake pocket on top of the box rails, the stake pocket mounts are very strong.

The bolts going into the stake pocket mounts actually go through the rack channel as well as the flat stock. There was room to put a pretty big fender washer in there as well to give the whole structure strength on top.

I removed the U-shaped moving mount from the bullrings and added a nut under the lower part to thread the bolts into (those go right from inside the channel to under the stake pocket mount. The u-mount of the bullring lifts up or recesses down and is held in place by some pins that can be pressed out, and removed.

This was an ad on my Instagram the other day. If I was ever going to ditch my camper shell, this would be my cover. The only thing that may be a pain is raising the cover, when you actually have gear strapped to it.

We have on a Colorado here and it is actually pretty easy to lift even with gear on top. We had two bikes and a bag attached and it was like lifting a fiberglass cover.

tcp2 10-05-2017 06:42 PM

Those bolts only go into threaded holes in the flat bar to keep the channel attached to the flat bar. they don't poke through the flat bar at all.

Another setup that looks pretty sweet, except I need the folding capability when not using the rack

Shotokan1509 10-18-2017 10:16 AM

Another interesting idea DeeZee invis-a-rack folding ladder rack. Not exactly what I was wanting setup wise but this would be useful for grabbing lumber etc as well without having to run around with a ladder rack all the time. Too bad at least first glance won't work with my bakflip hard tonneau

The CS is held on by 2 bolts for each leg (8 total) and can be taken off fairly easily.

I just picked one up last month (F1 CS) and haven't installed the rack yet. The rails come up about an inch and there's also tie down loops that you can slide into the rails w/o the rack.

I fell into this trap and since the racks have a full no-turn policy, that is my loss. Just communicating it so others don't have this same issue and land up having to sell it on craiglist at a loss
