I have the recon lights too with the Extang Solid Fold. Work PERFECT.

And the lights are under the rail so not only are they hidden but they are out of the way if you need to load dirt or mulch into the back. Plus, they are weather resistant so you don't have to worry about the rain or snow ... if your tonneau is off or folded up.

Tap the grey wire with purple stripe in the kick panel by the driver's side foot.

I would hazard to say the power trickle for a couple LED strips like above would be so small that even if you left them on overnight, there should be no noticible battery issues in the morning. Maybe if you left the truck sitting for a week with them on, but not overnight. I could be wrong though.

I like the wire to dome light idea, that way they auto off when the dome timer does if you do leave them on.......let me know what you find when you do that.

Possibly the third brake light might be an option as well?

I've left my cb on all night and never had an issue. LED's draw less power than a cb.

I installed the el chepo lights in my truck bed this evening. Tapping into the gray wire with the purple stripe did the trick. Thanks for the tip Sharper!

One press of the unlock on the key fob will run the lights for 10-15 min and that will work for me. I may end up putting another pair of the small LED's in get more light, but I'll run with these for a while to see if I really need more.

Got a cheap LED strip, ran 12V to one side, a plunger switch to ground on the other side, so when the tailgate opens, the light turns on.

There is a switch on the strip too to turn it off manually.

$10 total.

Here is 51 pages about it: https://www.f150forum.com/f38/led-bedlights-143928/

Right... just saw how old the original post is.
