Factory Ford Tail Gate Extender - Worth it?
I just bought a new F150. I was thinking about adding the Ford fold away tail gate extender. I haul dirt bikes so it seems like a no brainer. I had a traditional tail gate extender in my last truck which was great, but when it was flipped in toward the bed, it got in the way some times. So I was always taking it out or flipping it out (extended) when maybe I didn't need to. So the fold away Ford unit looks like a good idea. Is it easy to use? Does it fold out of the way enough? Is it sturdy enough to keep your stuff from falling out when locked in place or is it cheesy? Will two full size dirt bikes fit inside the thing with the 5.5 bed? Thanks.

From what I've seen it's a great unit. Definitley will hold your stuff in place. For a 5.5 bed it's definitley worth it. I honestly don't know how you guys with the baby sized beds get by without an extender! j/k :p

Love the look of my baby sized bed, also love my tailgate extender! Definitely worth the price to me, but mine came already in the truck and have used it several times! Good for leaving put together and folded into the bed as well, with the tailgate shut its a nice smaller area for small important loads that you don't want sliding everywhere (ie. My golf clubs or fishing tackle ). I don't think that you would have any trouble fitting the two dirt bikes in there either with it in its "proper" extended position... It does fold away nicely... However you still lose some space, but not enough to offset how handy this thing is! Go for it, you won't regret it! Oh and by the way, welcome to the FordF150amily!

I saw it at the dealer and really liked it. If I had the 5.5 bed I would have purchased it without a doubt. My girlfriend's brother has a 5.5 but the oem extender from the older f150 that flips to extend. That's very inconvenient because it's always in the way.

I got mine after the fact, super easy install but you will have to tap the already existing holes for the 2 bolts. Can't recall what size, tap/die set will have the thread gauge in there for you to find out. Other than the 2 bolts that's it for install. Paid 150$ for mine off a guy selling his brand new one he removed. Think for charges around 300$ so I'd check your local listings I.e kijiji for one first.
