The windshield would **** me off. How do they know it had a chip before going in? If they did and this sort of thing happens then they should have told you it may crack before you let it go through. Bottom line is it happened while in their car wash and like you said they should at least split the cost.

Sounds to me like their roller broom thingy dropped down hard and broke the windshield.
Before I knew how to detail, the local Cadillac dealer ran my 03 CTS thru their car wash
and the broom caught and tore off the back trunk pieces that came on the early CTS.
Service writer said, Our washer,Our fault,Our fix. 3 grand of their money to fix it and it
was never questioned as to who's fault it was. I mentioned later, while I was there for an
oil change, that I appreciated the way it was handled and the same service writer told me that even though they had been in business since the late 40s it didn't take much to
turn folks away and that they took peoples opinions seriously.

If the windshield was already chipped before the dealer got a hold of it. I don't think the dealer has any responsibility to have to fix it. It should have been repaired by the owner as soon as they got the chip.

Just hard to believe that alot of people drive there cars/trucks to 200k miles with original windshields with plenty of chips but it never results in cracking. Her car has 20k and does alot of city driving. Anyone know about the quality of ford windshields? Which reminds me my service advisor tryed to ask if she had a windshield put in it before because the seal looked funny. Nope thats fords windshield, and she bought it brand new so she would know..

Chips that aren't repaired are usually going to crack unless it's a Bullseye crack or just have an ideal environment that the vehicle operates in. Our fleet vehicles which are Ford vans go through about 3 windshields each per year. They get rock chipped constantly, too many to even think about fixing as they are operated in a harsh environment.
Believe you me, I've seen so many chips that you wouldn't think would crack and then they end up spreading all the way across the windshield.
If you can get your dealer to work with you on a new windshield that would be great and probably good for future customer relations with you.
I would usually be the last person to defend the stealerships, but I really don't think it is their responsibility unless you can prove that you didn't already have a chip in the windshield.
