Default Aux rocker switch wiring question.

So I just finished installing an aux rocker switch for my light bar and it has a spot to connect it into the dash lights for illumination. Anyone know where I can tap into the dash lights so that rocker will illuminate along with the other dash lights?

I think you can do that at the dimmer control switch...

Yeah its right there. I just am not sure what wire to tap into, or if it will kick out an error in the dash. When I tapped into the reverse lights it kicked an error code when put in reverse.

I believe it's safe to tap into the one that actually shows the variable resistance. Although I didn't use it, my aftermarket Nav/Stereo that was "vehicle specific" recommended using it if I wanted to dim the controls and backlighting with the dash lights. You should be fine.

The wire should be violet with a grey stripe.

Use extreme caution when tapping into the dimmer switch. Generally it's not recommended, especially if you have this sticker on the harness. I tapped into the fuse box on the passenger side kick panel (can't remember which fuse off hand) for my overhead switch panel from @KustomFX. If @lethalweapon chimes in, he'll know for sure.

I tapped in to the running light circuit for my switch panel. I can't dim them, but the switches are illuminated anytime the running lights are on (door open, headlights on, etc).

Where did you mount your light bar? I'm looking at adding a lightbar to my ecoboost and I want it hidden but not sure yet where to mount.

fseries54303 is exactly correct!!

Tapping into your OEM dimmer switch is NOT recommended and indeed many trucks have that warning sticker stating it as well.

Another reason: the rheostat does not give FULL power to led on the switch itself. That is NOT good for the led and will most likely make the led on the switch prematurely fail. Carling Technologies will not warranty an LED light failure. I’ve never seen ANY failure whatsoever, but simply best to avoid using that circuit.

Jim at OTRATTW and I have spoke about this and anyone wanting a “dimming feature” is recommended to use the AUTOMETER led rheostat that was designed just for their led gauges. It’s a simple 2 wire hook up.

Myself.... I don’t use the dimming feature at all. I simply ran my led wire to the #40 fuse which is the rear park lamp circuit. ..... they come on with the dash lights & also anytime you lock & unlock your doors.

The other option: simply run your led wire out to the front park lamp hot wire.

But I would highly recommend NOT using and refrain from using the OEM light dimmer circuit.

Here’s a YouTube video of my 6 Switch Panel showing the lower led of a OTRATTW/Carling Switch in action..... plus some useful info about using relays:

Thanks,
Brett
