My ft. driver's side shock is covered in oil. Can I use spring compressors to replace or should it go into the shop? Around here quotes are in the $575 range. Should these be replaced in pairs?

Anyone know what's the difference between Bilstein 4600 and 5100 installed @ stock height? Other shock ideas? I don't expect to install larger than stock tires.
