What if the 87 is closer to 85 and makes your vehicles run like crap? Then you run the 89 because it is in fact closer to 87 then the 87. You are correct, these vehicles were designed to run on crap fuel. So when they complain (you notice it) then you know the fuel must be REALLY bad.

And how do I know it's the fuel? Multiple vehicles, and even family members notice when they visit.

I run mainly mid-grade, which is 10% ethanol and 88 octane, because it's two cents less money than regular, and because regular here is only 85.5 octane - which is less than what our trucks are rated for -

I've used 87 and 91 octane, and prefer 91 because of the performance gain with the 5.0. In terms of mileage - no noticeable difference.
