it will power it but not charge it, you only get 5A from that port, iPad needs 10A to charge

I use mine to charge my S4 and it barely keeps it from losing a charge. I would not expect it to charge an ipad unless it was completely off.

Even with 5a it will charge but not if its in use an it will take a long time. Similar to using a laptop to charge it or an iPhone plug vs an iPad plug. If you use it while "charging" you will find that it will just slow its power loss.

When I plug my iPad2 into either the sync port or my usb2 the icon changes to full bat, as its just being powered not charged, I have also confirmed it by using the % display that it does not charge just merely power the iPad whether its on or off for long periods (use it to stream movies etc on long trips)
Basically the PSU on the ipad will not put any juice back into the battery until it sees 10A, and USB ports only give 5A, its a standard for USB in general (check w/DMM if not sure) that's also why an iPad charging brick is different than an iPhone.
I think some of the newer retina ones even get up to 13A with the higher cap batteries

Okay so if I charge the ipad completely to 100% and then plug it into the usb in truck it will last longer until it dies?

Absolutely. It will help sustain a charge but it will still go down if you are using the screen.

Nevermind, I just got a 6ft power cord for ipad and plugged it in on the outlet on back of console. Ran the wire under the console and behind the dash. Only has power when the key is on Thanks guys

How about the 12V / cigarette lighter outlets. Are they limited to 5A also? And do either of them stay powered with the key off?
