Default Another TRS Retrofit - '10 Platinum

I mentioned in another thread that I have committed myself to retrofitting TRS FX-R and Mini H1 projectors in my F150 (Two sets of headlights to see which set-up I prefer).

Good thing I bought a second set of front headlights.....this permaseal is next to impossible to get off in order to separate the headlight covers from the bucket. I have a read tens and tens of threads explaining how others are doing this, but it sure ain't workin' for me. Back into the oven for the fourth time. Maybe I'm being too careful so that I don't break and/or scratch anything....

UGH.........oven is heating up once again as I speak....back in a while. Any hints or tips would be appreciated.

More heat! What temp do you have the oven at? When I did it on prior vehicles I think I got up to 275ish before they just popped apart

Your right on the heat FX4 Mike....I had it too low and for too short of a time.

First time - 230 for 8 min
Second time - 230 for 9 min
Third time - 240 for 9 min
Fourth time - 250 for 14 min

After the fourth time, it did become a bit easier and I could finally get the headlight cover separated.

For the second headlight, I'm going 260 for 16 minutes. I'll let ya know how that works out for me....another day!

The second headlight housing definitely went easier...but easier is still not fun....It absolutely sucks performing this part of the retrofit!!!!! Especially getting the permaseal out of the bucket U channel.

I actually went 270 for 14 minutes. It took two sessions in the oven to get the lens off. Probably took 45 minutes vice 3 hours for the first one.

I'll get some pics uploaded soon. Now I just have to wait for the brown truck to arrive this week with my order from TRS.

Looking good man! Bet the cutting of the reflector and the shroud took some time?

Yes indeed, it did take a while to get done. I didn't realize the headlight bucket is cast resin vice plastic...makes for some nasty dust and fumes. Lot's of cutting, then fitting, then cut, then fit.....but I'm also a perfectionist!!!!!!!

The reflector bucket and shroud are going to be painted, so I wasn't worried about the chrome finish.

The stock bezel was chrome, and as you can see in the photo, they are now painted gloss black (Krylon Fusion). I also tinted the orange reflectors.

It's a painstaking process, but hopefully in the end, it will be worth it.

Now I can understand how and why companies charge $1K or more for FX-R retrofits. The MH1 still requires work, but nearly as much.
