Another engine knock thread
Hello,
I have a 2010 f150 4.6 4x4. I am very knowledgeable when it comes to my truck but I wanted your input. I have the not so famous knocing. It comes and goes. I have been doing a TON of research. Yes it has extedned warranty so Ill be taking it on tuesday or wednesday and let them break their heads. BUT
So it knocks lightly from the bottom where the oil pan is. Its not the famous steering shaft. but it sounds exactly like it. Its not a pulley.
Now on some days the sound is there. Others its completely gone.. Light but I can hear it in the cabin if the radio is of. I use the manual recommended oil. I used a fram oil filter this time. regular oil changes. Driven hard in sand but not extreme.
I heard theories ranging from a bad bearing to bad timing chain tensioner. Sounds like a TAP TAP not the regular injector click click click.
Anyone had this problem?
Oh I got 80 thousand miles.
Yes i take it off roading and people say I shouldnt but whats a 4x4 for if you cant take it to the dunes?

Thanks for replying.. well based on the dealer diagnostics. The knocking sign is the internals to the catalityc converter. Conviniently.. The truck is 80.0100miles which is out of warranty and out of federal law warranty... it costs 4000 dllrs to replace the converters.
Any ideas? Can i just "gut" the converters out? Can I get long headers and run a good exhaust? What do you guys think?Sure I have money to fix it but for sure not 1000. There are not f150s in my local junk yards. At least not 2010.

how did we go from blown engine to cats being bad?
but cats aren't a big deal. pick up some aftermarkets and take it to an exhaust shop. should be less than a grand total.
could probably pick up some cheap universals for a couple hundred say about $150 for the shop to put them on and your out $350. but it primarily depends on what kinda cats you end up buying. thats the biggest cost.

I assumed it was a blown engine since it was knocking.. Took it to the dealer and they checked it. Its both converters. They are broken internally. I can drive it with a banging noise without any damage.
Any specific universal ones that I can get? The truck has 3 o2 sensors right? or two? Thats probably the route I need to go.
My mileage is 80,055 ... yes I went over by 55 miles and ford refused to modify it.. I called them and no resolution.
Stock ones are high flow so I guess anything will work fas long as its universal?

Nothing about your cats... But please take advise and stop using gram filters on your ford engine. You are lucky to not have the cam phasers thrashing and covering up the cat noise. Stick to motor craft filters. For one the have a silicon anti syphon valve that the others don't. Helps stop dry starts. Take it from a guy that got over 260,000 out of my 4.6 and never had phaser issues. Also have 110,000 on wife's and no phaser issues. Only used synthetic oil and motor craft filters.
