Unfortunately my truck slings too much crap down the sides so I need the protection from the stock running boards.
That's why I'm afraid to install mine. I have a brand new set sitting in a box in the garage and every once in awhile I hear a rock ricochet off the bottom of my running boards and think "that could have been on my paint!" and has kept me from installing them thus far.

If I had it to do over again, the Amp steps would be the FIRST mod I'd do to my truck.

I take my truck off-road. Serious, nasty, Class IV+ kind of stuff. The Amp steps gives me an added 4-6 inches of ground clearance. If I had had OEM running boards in March when I did Mengel Pass and Dedekera Canyon in Death Valley, they'd still be sitting up on the trail somewhere all mangled up.

I only wish I could figure out a way to install rock sliders, but so far the Amps have escaped any damage...

I too had concerns about rocks hitting my rocker panels so I installed some Weathertech no drill mud flaps. Problem solved.

I love my AMP steps and did what kilowatt did to address rocks and mud on the paint. The mudflaps are very functional and also keep the tops of the boards, where you step, clean from mud and road crap.

Before the weathertechs my front tires would sling road dirt and mud on top of the step and they staid pretty dirty if I forgot to lower them when washing the truck.
I know many don't like mudflaps and I prefer the look without them as well but I won't give up being able to wash my truck and go through a few puddles and not have dirt slung all down the side of the truck. It stays clean much longer now.

Let me help you some more then.
Once you pay for the amp steps buy some additional Rigid A-Series rock lights to tie into the Amp pre-wired LED's.
When you unlock the door or open it at night it turns to daylight around the truck.

I installed longer mud flaps and I still get rocks hitting my running boards.

What ones did you buy? I had a set and they didn't fit right around the factory FX4 wheel moldings.

It depends on whether or not you have running boards within 2 inches of of the front fender well.

Here's a link to Weathertech site, click on "continue" and pick with or without running-boards, then with or without factory FX4 fender flares to get the correct part number. I can't find my receipt or I'd be more specific, but I don't recall the running board thing being an issue with the fit.
