Default Ambient light sensor

2011 FX4 Scab
where is the sensor for dash panel lights? I'd like them to be on while driving. All the time. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be.and I can't see the panel in low light situations. Also I'd like to change lights behind panel to brighter and different color. Is that doable? TIA

Center of the dash near the windshield.

Covering it should (?) do the trick.

I think it only works if your headlights are set to auto on
