Alternate options to replace resonator?

Alternate options to replace resonator?
Hey Guys!
So I had a SIDO Borla muffler put on a few weeks ago and it sounded great but was too quiet for my liking and it was hard to hear it over the sound of the CAI when I punched it until I got into the 4k rpm range and then it roared, problem is, I don't drive in that range much. Not having much experience with exhaust mods, I stayed conservative and kept the resonator on but after a week I went back and had them take it off. Sound was incredible, I had that deep, loud rumble from the 4k range but now in the 1200-1600 rpm range with just normal acceleration. Problem now is there is a slight drone around the 2000 rpm when cruising around 70 or up a long incline. It's not horrible or deafening but is a bit unwanted, even if it was a little less I could live with it but its right at that annoying threshold. So here's my question: Is there something that's maybe a 1/4 the size of the stock resonator I could put in place to minimize that drone but not detract to much from the volume gained by removing the resonator?
I just measured the stock resonator my mechanic gave me and it basically looks like a straight flow 6"Diameter x 16" long muffler, but again, I don't know much about these systems and look forward to your experiences and insight.
In case in matters, I'm driving a 2012 F150 STX Scab 5.0
Thanks!

You've got basically the same truck as myself.
Which Borla system did you put on? Sounds like the S Type? The new S Type uses an ATAK muffler, with a resonator installed upstream. Or, are you sure if that was your stock resonator? Need a little more input on exactly what you have.
I too have a CAI, And have noticed below around 2k RPM, you don't hear much out of it, but get the RPM's up over that, and yes, it does seem to drown out the exhaust, but I'll betcha on the outside, the exhaust IS heard.
Drone, know what you're saying, that's why I have the Borla, NO drone.
I hate to suggest cobbling something up, and haven't searched, but maybe Flowmaster, DynaFlow might have a resonator you're looking for.

Johnday [/B]What muffler (model) do you have. Also, what is the inlet and outlet size of the factory exhaust?
As I type, I have the complete Borla S Type, all 3" from Y pipe back to the muffler, then 2 3/4" or 2 1/2" dual out from the muffler. Can't remember which.
You can get just the Borla muffler, that's why I asked the OP exactly what he had. If he does have the stock Ford resonator, 2 1/2", then removed it, I can see where the problem could be.

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't do the whole system, I did a muffler swap and had my muffler shop install a SIDO s-type Borla muffler (ProXS Muffler part # 40348) http://www.borla.com/products/proxs_...rt__40348.html. We kept the stock resonator on initially and there was absolutely no drone at cruising speeds but like I said before, the overall volume just wasn't where I wanted it. I had him take off the resonator and I would say it increased the overall volume by at least 50%-75%. I love the sound, it just now has a slight drone at cruising speed. Again, I can turn up the radio a bit and live with it but if there is something small I can put back in instead of my stock resonator to at least take the edge off the cruising drone it would be perfect. The stock resonator looks to go from 3 to 2.5"

Dickscalp LOL!!! that's a good one. There's always a handful in every forum.
The drone you are describing is what is making me not get a aftermarket exhaust. I love how quiet mine is inside the cab. I too have search You Tube etc searching for exhaust with the resonator still in place. There are not many of them. I would think that since the resonator is 6" in diameter; if you go smaller that it would louden it up some.

I researched heavily and decided upon Borla as most who have compared the different tones agreed that there is little to no drone and the sound is exceptional. There was absolutely no drone at any cruising speeds when I left the resonator in so maybe that would be what your looking for.

You will have to experiment with bulitt mufflers in order to get the sound desired. All will flow more volume and have more sound than the stock resonator.
I've left my stock res in for the exact fear of drone. I want more sound at times then others is don't. The struggle is real.

Sorry for the delay, had a few things to tend to.
OK, I just measured my stock resonator, 2 1/2" I/O.
So, the next thing would be to find out the part number for the Borla, "ATAK" muffler. If it is the same as the ProXS muffler, I think I know what might have happened. Your stock resonator is actually smaller, 2 1/2" versus, 3" for the Borla. I could be wrong, but in my mind, that smaller diameter on the I/O may have been enough to restrict the gas flow enough, to make the system too quiet for you. I can't confirm that though.
But, to rid yourself of the drone, you might try a resonator, from Borla, with the 3" I/O. I guess basically what I'm saying, is to retrofit that in place of the stocker, and in affect, you'll have an S Type exhaust.
A short bullet straight through would do the same thing, but I don't have a clue as to the length, that is, maybe a 12" length, opposed to the 16" stock resonator, and using the 2 1/2" pipe you have there now?
I hope that might help you, but remember, I can't back any of that scientifically, only with conversations with exhaust guys when I was trying to make my Roush act civilized enough to actually stand it.
