I am not going to claim that I am expert when it comes to trailer brakes but when I was doing the research for mine all the sources I looked at seemed to agree that the oem ford controller was one of the best controllers

Need some schooling. My boat trailer's actuator seems to not be engaging and every time I take off from a stop I hear/feel that sucker slam. This wasn't happening on my last truck. Is the brake controller in the cab something I need to adjust or what might be a problem here.
Thanks in advance

Is your boat trailer surge brakes or electric brakes?
If surge, then check the master cylinder fluid level.

I have the Ford TB on my F150. We have a P3 on our Armada.
They both work well with our 7300# travel trailer.
The Ford integrates with the built in sway control.
You don't have to take the Ford controller off your vehicle and put it away when you aren't using it.
I would also recommend the Ford controller, whenever available.

They are surge and the cylinder is full so that's what's got me scratching my head.

Surge brakes have nothing to do with the truck's brake controller, since they activate when you hit the truck's brakes strong enough to get the compression on the trailer's surge brakes to activate. Therefore, adjusting or installing a brake controller in the truck would be irrelevant.

Correct. If you have a trailer with surge brakes, then a brake controller in the truck serves no function.

As stated, if you're looking to buy a trailer, it is highly recommended that you get one with electric brakes, not surge brakes, giving you much more control.
