I wanted to do this as well, but do not think it will work to charge and use the GPS at the same time.
I plugged mine in to the USB1 port and the GPS defaults to charge only, it will not turn on, it is a Garmin Nuvi 2595LMT.
So, if youre looking to only charge your GPS, it should work, but to use it and charge it, for mine, it has to be plugged into the 12v.

If anyone is looking for the cable, here's the one I got. It worked great and I didn't even have to trim the molded plastic around the tip.http://www.sfcable.com/SF-UM2AFC-03.html

As so many folks have already written, *thank you* for the quality and pics of this write up. This was presented as idiot proof as I think it can be made ....

USB2 not recognized
I have a brand new 2014 SCREW XLT. I bought a cable and plugged it into the 2nd port on the back of the radio. Easy enough. HOWEVER, USB2 is not recognized. I can play the usb or ipod in the USB1 front connector but it won't switch when connected to USB2.
It is not the cable because when I unplug something from the cable it says USB2 removed. I put the cable into the number 1 slot and it works.
So what the heck? This should be an easy mod! I can already tell that SYNC is a POS!

While Sync has some idiosyncrasies, it's not really a POS. It has a learning curve that is steeper than a lot of current electronic devices, but works ok once you figure it out. Not ideal, but functional.

Ford did an update to the Sync system that took using voice commands to switch to USB 2 to not work. Also for USB2 to work you have to have nothing plugged into USB1. Since yours is a 2014 you have the updated Sync. I have the update on my truck and lost voice command to switch to USB2 but I have a thumb drive connected to USB2 and it works great. I can use all voice commands with it but have to use the media button to switch to it if going from CD to radio. If I have anything plugged into USB 1, USB 2 will not work.

My wife's Honda Pilot has a button that I can push to bounce between Line in USB or Bluetooth without having to deal with the Siri imitation - I must say I am less than impressed by Sync.

Yep you can't say USB2 and if you say USB, it says USB not found if USB is empty (but USB2 is occupied). The only way I can get USB2 to play is to put something in USB and USB2, start playing from USB and then unplug it - then and only then will USB2 play. Seems like a pain in the backside.
