Default 8+ mpg loss towing???

Well I picked up my boat from storage today, got 18.6 mpg @68mph on the way out to grab it, 10.3 mpg @68mph on the way back with boat in tow…. Man I can’t believe I’m losing 8+mpg towing a whopping 5500lb total……..

50 psi in all 4 trailer tires, brakes are not hanging up either, wheels spin nice and free. I can’t believe how hard this truck is on fuel with anything in tow behind it, heck with a 2 place snowmobile trailer (1500lbs tops) in tow it only gets about 11.5mpg. Towing the boat it was pushing about 5-6psi in order to maintain 68mph on a dead flat road.

I have to say that I have been pretty disappointed with the lack of fuel mileage with this truck so far, on the other hand at least it gets better MPG than the boat does!

truck has about 7300 miles on it now and life average is 14mpg...

As soon as that Eco has to lay into the turbos to work, your mileage will REALLY tank. Trade off I guess for the great unloaded mileage.

I'm not surprised at all!! It's not just the weight that consumes the extra fuel. At 68 mph you have a crap load of wind resistance there!!

You added a boat/trailer that weighs probably the same or 1/3rd more than your truck, what did you THINK would happen....you're pulling a huge boat with a 6-banger and you're still getting double digits.

Good lord..

Every time I hear this subject I either laugh or You're towing your truck's weight! What kind of mileage do you expect? C'mon! If you're worried about mileage while towing you probably shouldn't tow..

Takes fuel to move mass. Thats pretty typical MPG for any engine towing.

well if i got great mileage unloaded i wouldnt care so much! heck i see guys saying they are getting into the low 20's highway at 70mph, mine just barely gets to the 18's in those conditions, most of the time its only in the 17's mpg at 70mph.

Fwiw my '03 duramax wouldnt even lose 2mpg towing this boat, and it got better mpg overall than my ecoboost is getting so far, when i bought this truck i was hoping it would do better if not at least match my everyday empty driving mpg of my old truck

Your '03 Duramax was a 3/4 ton diesel. This is a 1/2 Ton gas. Apples to oranges, man. It will tow the boat with better mpg because it has big torque and heavy duty equipment. Fwiw, 18mpg is not really far off from 20 mpg. It could potentially be your surrounding atmosphere affecting mpg. Tire pressure, spark plug gap etc.

I'm well aware that my '03 was a 3/4 ton diesel truck, it weighed probably 1500lbs more than my ecoboost does, it also made 65less hp than my ecoboost does. it did make 100lb more tq though than my ecoboost. in my everyday commute i would get 2.5mpg better with the duramax, i would have expected the 1/2 ton lighter ecoboost to at least match or beat that MPG??

I knew going in that it would not get as great of MPG #'s as the dmax did while towing, but lets just say that i didnt expect it to be 6+ mpg worse while towing the exact same combo with a 1500lb lighter truck?

as for tires, i run 40 in the trucks tires which is higher than the door calls for. you mentioned spark plug gap?? are people changing from the OEM gap and finding better MPG??
