6th gear at 40MPH
So I was reading one of these threads and it mentioned that you can hit the + on the gear shift to see your gears 1-6. Mine have been off since I got the truck so I turned them on and notice I will be in 6th gear while only going 40-45MPH. Is this normal? That seems like an awfully high gear for such a low speed. It also seems to skip gears sometimes but not all the time, strange since I am not hot footing it or anything. I also only get 12MPG city and I drive like a grandpa....most of the time. I only have 600 miles on it bone stock.

I have a 5.0 and am only getting a little better mileage than you in the city but I have about the same mileage own the truck. I haven't seen mine skip gears but I do notice that it can get into 6th around 40.

That sounds about right, especially if you're babying it and have the 3.73s. As far as the mpg did you reset it after you purchased it? Your avg should start to rise as you get more miles.

Faster it goes into the higher gears, the slower the motor is turning. You have less power but you don't need it in the city, better MPG. I have an old Jeep with a 5 preed stick. I'm in second before I get out of the driveway and in fifth soon after.

Yes I've reset mine once. Is it better to baby it during the break in? I read the manual but it seemed to be a little vague on actually breaking the engine in and this is the first brand new vehicle I've ever purchased

My last F150 had 84000 babied highway miles on it when I got it. I took possession and took it off road, hauled trailers etc. Tranny wasn't used to it, started slipping 30,000 miles later.

People have varying opinions. I like to break it in like I'm going to drive it in real driving. Before it was even mine I roasted the tires from a stop with a 14' enclosed trailer.(Spirited test drive) I personally believe its never good to baby something all the time, put her to the boards a few times a day.

Yes it is , unfortunately, personally i'd rather have a little worst millage in return for it not having to down shift every time you get on the gas
High gear + low speed + need to speed up at all = downshifting
