6R80 Transmission service
2010 F-150 XLT 5.4 4x4 supercrew 145" WB, 6R80 transmission on the 7200# GVWR package. Just rolled over 90k. Would tag it as normal service duty rather than severe.
Was talking to the local dealer that I actually had good luck with on warranty work and send all warranty work for my 2015 fusion and for anything that comes up with our new 2017 explorer.
Scheduling the transmission service, they mentioned throwing in a bottle of friction modifier for the 6R80 with the Mercon LV to help long term on these. I'm running a 5star tuning SCT tune that pretty much eliminated the transmission shutter and slop a long time ago. But the best I can tell they are using the FM during service to help with these same issues? Anyone have experience with dealers doing this or any other reasons they would use the FM? They did say I can choose not to run the FM if I prefer but seemed to recommend it, or if I wanted to bring in a case of Redline D6 or Amsoil fuel efficient ATF for the service fluid rather than the mercon LV.
Not to get into an oil/fluid debate, but is anyone with a 09-10 6R80 running Amsoil ATF? I've had good luck with Amsoil for oil and filters in our now traded Honda Fit, the Ford Fusion, a few transit connects at work, the F-150, and all of the fluids in my Harley. Have a commercial account with them for work and about to place another order this weekend for several vehicles.

I saw the Ford tech videos where he said to use Mercon LV ONLY in these, so that's what I did. It's a great fluid. I changed the filter also. Hope to get to 200,000 with no issues now. 105,000 and trucking right now....

I get that mercon LV is a good fluid but why the recommendation for friction modifier with it but not with amsoil or redline? This is a fairly well regarded dealer for service on f-series and super duties. Has been for many years.

They are just engineers, what would they know?

Just changed mine and used LV only and I have a 5 Star tune also..
By the way advanced auto parts stop carrying LV don't know why?? Started a post guess no one cares ??
At 99k fluid was clean magnet wasn't bad either.. Mighty evac pump came in handy

I put in the dealer LV oil when I bought a high mileage 6r80 at 316k Kms, three years ago.
Tinge of red still, may have been changed already, not sure. Did filter and magnet cleaning.
FM is for diffs not for hydraulic pumps, which have clutches and solenoids, not big gears and roller bearings. Ford and GM used a joint development team for this tranny, two biggest truck companies with billions of dollars.
What aftermarket company has the kind of engineering resources to out think their techs.
Some of the aftermarket stuff IMO is more marketing than reality.
LV is a full 100 percent synthetic oil. My 2 cents.
Oh yeah, have used Amsoil in Atv's etc, it's really good oil.

No friction modifier. Mercon LV only. If you desperately want to add something, a bit of lubeguard red, but it's not really necessary.
Accountants and marketing departments have input into service intervals, not just engineers. Think cost of ownership equations.
