5.4 vs 5.0
#21
I am going to go out on my own here. Wife just bought an 08 Expedition with the 5.4 6 speed. I have a 2012 FX4 5.0. While the 5.4 3V 6 speed is a great combo, Im just not feeling all these comments about it having more "low end grunt" over the 5.0. To me, the 5.0 has more power everywhere. It takes off harder (with tire spin) where the Expy will not turn a tire on wet roads. Also, the Expy constantly downshifts on the interstate on a slight incline. The 5.0 does not. Punch them both at 75 and the 5.0 acts like a Mustang wanna be and gets all angry and stuff. The 5.4 just kind of takes off like it should. I am seriously not downing the 5.4. Ive had many. I also thought my old 5.4 2V's had more low end grunt off the line likely due to a real throttle cable. I like the 5.4. With the 6 speed it gets within 1 mpg of the 5.0 in my experience. But, I also held off on gettting a new F150 for years waiting on an engine change. I can actually see everything on a 5.0. Tons of room and easy to service.

A has been that never was
You will have NO issue with a 5.4. It is a truck motor with a 4.10 inch stroke. 365 tq is pretty bad ***. I love the 5.0. It is more powerful. However, to me, it is a car engine and has to rev high to make all of its power. I love my 5.4.

Interesting mix of 5.4/5.0 people. It seems to be a personal preference. Interestingly enough, the thing i love the most about my '12 IS how you can wind it out to insane levels for a pickup. What i may end up doing is just waiting until the '13 rebates come out next late september, and pick up a new XLT again...

Expy has 3.31's. you guys made me go look! Should have been obvious I guess.
But, again, I am not downing the 5.4. Just want to be clear.
I love the 5.0 characteristics. Maybe it's the Mustang guy coming out.

We have both a 2008 FX4 5.4 Scab 60,000KM and a New 2012 XTR Screw 5.0 1,500KM, I love my New truck, but I also Like the 5.4 to toally different trucks, nit and day
like all the other post's said the 5.0 is like vamped muscle car in a truck, the 5.4 feels and acts like a truck. I like them Both......but the 5.4 feels like it has more out of the gate for power, quicker responce then the 5.0
until I added my K7N Kit now its exellent....
My wife has a lead foot and so far its been a great truck and she loves it and hates my new one.....so id have to go on personal choice.....lol.....
good luck on finding a regular cab that doesn't have a million miles or been beat hard.......

Personally I think you can just feel the difference in technology between the 5.4 and the 5.0. Having driven a 2010 5.4 (Scab, 3.55 with stock 18's) for a weekend I can honestly say I was happy to get back into my 5.0.
Took the 2010 on a camping trip, truck belonged to my cousin and he let me drive it pulling his 3800lb holiday camper. Mostly highway and some dirt roads near the end. I've also pulled this same camper with my 5.0 (Scab, 3.31 with stock 17's). The difference wasn't as earth shattering as some might think. I don't feel I hand to work my 5.0 any harder pulling that trailer. If anything the fact that the 5.0 rev's much more freely made it seem more comfortable pulling the trailer. The 5.4 while it does make more power down low and had no issues pulling the camper it felt a little lethargic.
The 5.4 was a good motor, good at towing and pretty damn reliable but the 5.0 makes its mark with newer technology and a more free breathing set-up. Plus like others have stated your probably better off hunting down a 2012 5.0 with the options you want and take advantage of the current rebates. This is just my personal opinion, good luck with your decision.

There are more differences with the newer truck than just the engine.
The steering is also much nicer (IMO). Instead of spending 40k on a 2nd, fun/work truck; if you get a basic regular cab 4wd with the 5.0, it shouldn't be anywhere near that.
Advantages to new: Full Warranty, better ride, better seats, better steering, better transmission, better fuel mileage, no previous owners problems.
Currently there are some killer rebates on the '12's and there are plenty out there still. The highest rebate currently is on an XLT package with the 5.0 probably making it the same price as the XL work truck.
Hard to find a nice used regular cab, most are in a work cycle and not traded or sold until they need to be.

+1 I'd buy new. I just saw an 07 XLT in the paper this past saturday and they were asking $25,600. It had 54,000 miles on it! You could probably get an 2012 w/ a regular cab for around that price better. In my area I am seeing discounts (rebate, incentives,...) around 10-11,000.
