I love the 5.4. I've driven both, and yeah the 5.0 is a bit more high strung, it's not so much that I'd even consider trading to it. High strung is the key word. You gotta wind it up to feel that difference in a 6000lbs truck.
For consideration, I make a yearly jaunt through the mountains to Fairmont and a few other spots and I'll tell you that 5.4 with the 6 speed pulls like a train and never left me wanting. Offroad the low end grunt is really nice. Fuel mileage wasn't even that bad, even through the mountains.
Price- I can't speak to that. But if its on your consideration list, I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's been a really strong pack mule for me for the last few years. Pulling, loaded up, it just performs great and I am never left wanting more.
Hope this helps!

There are more differences with the newer truck than just the engine.
The steering is also much nicer (IMO). Instead of spending 40k on a 2nd, fun/work truck; if you get a basic regular cab 4wd with the 5.0, it shouldn't be anywhere near that.
Advantages to new: Full Warranty, better ride, better seats, better steering, better transmission, better fuel mileage, no previous owners problems.
Currently there are some killer rebates on the '12's and there are plenty out there still. The highest rebate currently is on an XLT package with the 5.0 probably making it the same price as the XL work truck.
Hard to find a nice used regular cab, most are in a work cycle and not traded or sold until they need to be.

Hello all, I just bought a 2012 f150 with the 5.0, and while i love it, I need another truck. I don't want to go spend another 40 grand on a brand new one, so what differences am i going to notice between driving an 09-10 5.4, and my 2012 5.0? I don't tow much (~3000LBS) But the 5.4 will mainly have mountain duty (I need to get up and down a snow covered mountain pass daily) so my questions;
1)How is the 5.4 powered compared to the 5.0? I know the 5-oh has 60 more horsepower blah blah blah, but i want some personal experiences of people who have driven both
2) I need a shorter wheel base, as this will most likely be used on trails a fair bit, so i'm looking for a regular cab short box 4x4. Do they even make this specific group of options? And if so, what would a 09-10 with less than 50k miles run me? I'm located in South west british columbia (Canada), but i'm willing to head south to WA or OR to buy one.
Thanks!

Secondly, while I really like the 5.0, I have no problems with the 5.4 at all. For grunting around, running on trails, etc, the low end grunt of the 5.4 will not leave you wanting for a 5.0, at least not in my experience. To me the 5.4 seems much more like a low rpm lugger, while the 5.0 likes rpm's,
I hope you have good luck finding a regular cab truck, but trucks aren't used just as trucks too much anymore (in the classic sense), so pickings might be a bit slim in the configuration you are looking for.

I am going to go out on my own here. Wife just bought an 08 Expedition with the 5.4 6 speed. I have a 2012 FX4 5.0. While the 5.4 3V 6 speed is a great combo, Im just not feeling all these comments about it having more "low end grunt" over the 5.0. To me, the 5.0 has more power everywhere. It takes off harder (with tire spin) where the Expy will not turn a tire on wet roads. Also, the Expy constantly downshifts on the interstate on a slight incline. The 5.0 does not. Punch them both at 75 and the 5.0 acts like a Mustang wanna be and gets all angry and stuff. The 5.4 just kind of takes off like it should. I am seriously not downing the 5.4. Ive had many. I also thought my old 5.4 2V's had more low end grunt off the line likely due to a real throttle cable. I like the 5.4. With the 6 speed it gets within 1 mpg of the 5.0 in my experience. But, I also held off on gettting a new F150 for years waiting on an engine change. I can actually see everything on a 5.0. Tons of room and easy to service.
