Default The 5.0 Tick

I sold my beloved 05 Lariat with the not so loved 5.4 motor due to cam phaser noise I didn't want to repair. I was pretty excited to get a good deal on a 2012 Lariat supercrew 5.0 a few weeks ago. I haven't had a chance to drive the truck much because I commute in my car all week long.

Took the truck for a drive up into the mountains today to escape the inversion, and after an hour on the road, I get out and the truck is ticking. Can't hear the noise inside the cab, but at hot idle its ticking and you can hear it from ten+ feet away. So being paranoid after having issues with my 5.4, I jump onto youtube and find others with the EXACT same noise I am hearing. Not a lot, mind you, but several identical videos of the noise. Then I hear of people getting the motor replaced due to oblong cylinders???

WTF! Really regretting my purchase now, since the truck is out of warranty due to miles (64k). Should have taken everyone's advice and just bought a new XLT instead. I have a 3mo/3k mile powertrain warranty on the truck through the Audi dealer I bought the truck from, but they won't do anything and say its normal noise.

The truck runs and drives fantastic though, noise is only there at idle. My wife is gonna kill me if I tell her I have to trade/sell the truck, take a loss, and then find another truck. I'm already nearly in the dog house for selling my old truck and buying this one (she does not understand the mechanical issues, and only sees that it runs and drives nice and smooth).

Anyone else's 5.0 tick like this at idle? I can't hear it when looking under the hood, but from the drivers side wheel well its pretty dang loud.

Is it a tick or more of a soft knock? My has a soft knock sometimes, that is only heard from the wheel wells, but it usually only happens when I this cold outside. Sounds kinda like Liston slap, but does not happen all the time.

Mine ticks at idle also but it's injector tick. My Golf R is the same way since they're both direct injection engines. When I started using ethanol free fuel the tick practically disappeared. My Golf R sounded like my friends diesel Golf before I started using the E0 fuel.

My 2011 5.0 has a soft tick resembles a small header gasket leak noise but no lights or performance issues. Same only at idle as well and not heard from cab. 2 years+ now and no issue though. Your fine bud.

Take it to the dealership and ask. There is a tsb for a tick while hot. My own 5.0l has it and I'll be fixing it this spring so I can walk to work. I think In some positions it's a tensioner seal or in extreme cases engine replacement. They usually are pretty rare

I see this complaint on here fairly often but for me, every OHC Ford engine I ever heard ticks. My 03 Cobra, 08 GT, 09 GT, and now my 5.0. There's a lot going on under those valve covers and I've never had a problem or let it concern me.

+1 on the Mobil 1. I long ago switched to it from Royal Purple simply because it made my engine quieter.

I've got an '11 and it has ticked since the day I got it. Dealer says it's normal and since nothing has happened after 2 and a half years, I guess I believe them. (Btw, I've never missed a service so the oil that's in there is what they require.)

I had the 5.4 cam phaser problem and valve spring crack. It had a bad ticking sound before it all happened. It was very expensive to repair. So, I know how you feel when you hear a ticking noise, trust me. I do not have 5.0. However many of my friends do. They all have a ticking noise that is kinda loud outside not in cabin. So I think it maybe normal. Try to post a video so we can hear it. The 5.0 motor is a really good motor.
