5.0 knocking at idle, becoming louder/worse...

Don't think there is a 5W40 that meets ford specs and will do more harm than good. Usually a 5W30 will remove tappet noises on cold start up and some chain noises.

IMHO, there are plenty of high quality 5w40 oils out there, and there's lots of Mustang Coyote owners running 5w50 so....

If you plan on driving your 5.0 F150 like anyone of those earlier mentioned Ford products speced for 5w-50,then by all means.

I've taken mine in for the slight faint knock and they heard it, done a compression test and all checked out and I am watching it, but it doesn't use any oil either. I bought a stethoscope and it sounds like #3 when it does it. I will take it back in before extended warranty is out.

That may be,but technically Ford specs 5w-50 for the GT500 (5.4 supercharged) GT350 (5.2 NA) and the Track Pack Mustang GT (5.0 NA) because Ford expects those models to be driven HARD.Yes,we all know there's little different between any F150 5.0 or Mustang GT 5.0 or Track Pack Mustang GT 5.0.

I've heard what the new 5.3 gmc/chevy motors sound like, and they make more odd noises than anything I've come across before. All our company vehicles are gmc/chevy and the new 15's/16's have a very odd "fluttering" noise at idle. It's crazy.

Mine doesn't burn oil either. I just changed my oil after 4,900 miles and my oil life was at 56% when I changed it. I never checked to see how much came out but it looked to be at least 7 quarts or more. I know full replacement equates to about 7.7 quarts. I'm done worrying about it, just the nature of the beast I guess.

Ive been meaning to get my truck in too just looking for some time. Part of me doesn't want to even waste the time because I already know they're just going to tell me it's "normal."

There are several guys at my work that have new GM 5.3's and they all make that fluttering sound at idle too.

Try changing over to full synthetic 5w30 if you haven't allready done so at the next oil change....I bet the slight knock will not be as bad. Same issue with my 2012 5.0 from a while back, wasn't using any oil, no performance issues just a little knock at warm idle. Switched to 5w30 and noise is substantially quieter if not gone.

A warm idle knock would be more concerning to me than a cold knock. A cold knock isnt abnormal on these engines due to the aluminum and iron components behaving differently as they heat up, creating temporary tolerance fluctuations. Mine only knocks before its fully warmed up and its smooth and quiet after that. (knock on wood). If it ever develops a warm knock im going to be pissed.
